vitamins and supplements hello, i have just joined this forum and am very excited to chat and learn from you all, i have a three year old yorkie named alfie who has always had a sensitive tummy, we have had tests done and tried every thing, so now i have just started him on home made food, chicke and rice has always agreed with him and so im giveing him this and brown rice and certain veggies to start with, its only the first day today and so far, hes doing well, no sickness or rumbling tummy, but my question is please? what vitamins or other things should i be giving him to keep him happy and healthy? all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. loo:Dk forward to hearing from you soon, lots of love lauraxx |
The best advice I can give you is to talk to a nutritionist. What are the symptoms and what tests have been done? |
thanks for getting back to me, the signs are that he used to be sick all the time but now its once a week maybe? and its just white foam, he also used to have diarrhoea but now thats stopped. when he was three months, they thought he had a bad blockage so he was opened up, but there wasnt any thing there at all? hes had lots of blood tests and seen different vets. apart from that, hes healthy and abit over weight, has never lost weight and is always alert and ready to play. its now and then we hear his tummy rumble really bad and maybe then the next day he might be sick? its not as bad as it used to be, the vet told me to try him on home cooked food so thats why im doing and so far, all tday hes been great, he loves it and hasnt been sick or any thing, so im hoping this will work? if not i might see a homopathic vet maybe? but thanks for any advice you can and are giving, lots of love laura |
Did the vet do a biopsy while he was open? Borborygmus (stomach rumbling, intestinal noises) can be a sign of IBD. You would need a biopsy to know for sure or to see if it is something more serious. With all the throwing up, it may be something else. In cases of IBD, it can be good to use omegas 3s as their linoleic source. Has the vet tried Metronidazole or Tylan? A homemade diet is great but you may want to make it grainless and a novel protein should be used (maybe whitefish?). Probiotics may work for some dogs. |
thank you for getting back to me. the vet didnt do a biopsy as he said it wasnt needed? but that was a few years ago, im trying to avoid that if possible as my little boy doesnt do too well at the vets, but if every thing fails then i guess that will be the way to go, hes given me some tablets called antepsin, and i just give him half when he has been sick and that seems to do the trick? im going to start adding white fish this week, i did a big shop for him and am trying to add things to his diet, but have to see the vet first. is oily fish ok to give him now and then? maybe like sardines? its so worrying isnt it with these little dogs? but they are so worth it. i do get very stressed too when hes sick and its a constant worry for us all here, thank you for good advice, its so nice to chat to other yorkie owners who know what to advice and help. lots of love laura |
Because you want to homecook for a dog with a medical problem, it is very important to talk to a nutritionist. Grains and soybeans can cause flatulence, so you might want to go with no soy and only one grain or no grain since he already has GI issues. Some vegetables like broccoli and spinach may not set well. Only one protein source should be used in case it is a protein response causing irritation (probably not because he was so young when it started). Maybe a biopsy wasn't done because he was so young. Is his stool ever bloody? Has an ulcer been ruled out? Wylie's Mom may know about the sardines. I prefer whitefish. |
I so agree - talk to a specialist regarding your baby's specific needs. My Bailey has never had any issues - but just so you know - some of the supplements I use in my homemade raw diet is bone meal, potassium, safflower oil, fish oil and multivitimans (all human grade supplements) Good luck! |
hello again, no hes never had blood in his stool at all, and an ulcer hasnt been ruled out. im thinking about swapping vets tomorrow as the vet we have been going too doesnt seem that interested at all, after all the tests were run and came back ok, he told me that he just has a sensative tummy and to deal with it, then tried to sell me all the different foods for upset tummys. we have spent thousands on all different special foods and nothing has worked so far, so im going to try and change vets tomorrow and speak to someone too about home cooking for him thank you for the great advice its brill. lots of love laura |
