butt licking
 
Sorry to be blunt with the title... Smokey keeps licking his butt. Usually he will do that if he has poop stuck to his butt, but there is none and he has been doing this off and on (mainly on) for the last 2 weeks. And when he does it, it's not like a quick little venture... it's like a 5 minute ordeal. Could he just be itchy?

Do you think that maybe his anal glands need to be emptied?? :confused: Is he making that area raw? :(

No he's not making it raw. He just licks and licks, then he'll leave it alone for awhile and then a couple days later he's at it again. He always does it as he's laying on me before we go to sleep or right when we wake up or when I'm laying on the couch with him.

hmm not sure unless he needs his anal glands emptied. Have you done this lately? Have you noticed him scooting at all?:)

If it is not due to his anal glands, then I honestly think it is a dog thing.

I noticed Hiro was doing this a lot and it was starting to gross out my husband. He did it quite a lot! We realized later that he had tapeworms! (We had fleas shortly before that)... We treated him and it looked to clear up, but he now he has roundworms. Sheesh! We're treating that now! He's licked his bum lots since the day we got him, so we don't even know what normal dog butt licking activities look like! haha

So, in short... maybe worms?

It sounds like anal glands or tapeworms.
If not and this is new, maybe it burns or something and I would get him checked.

Ellie licks down there too but more in the front and not really under her tail. She also doesn't do it for long.

I would think anal glands too. The next time you go to the groomers have them show you how to express them. If it gets too bad before your next groomer visit the vet can do it.
