is gas anesthesia the safest? Dolly's getting a dental cleaning next Thursday, her vet told me that he would use gas anesthesia on her since its safer. I was doing some research online about different methods of anesthesia, and in one article it mentioned that gas anesthesia rquire a prior injection, that kind got me concerned? Dolly has gone under anesthesia a couple times before and both times the pre bloodwork came out okay and she made it through with no problem. of course they are still gonna perform pre bloodwork this time, but Im still very nervous about it! |
Gas anesthesia is just for maintenance. Your vet will begin with a pre op shot to relax her, and then follow up with a tranquilizer so she can be intubated. Your vet will either use isoflurane or sevoflurane. I think isoflurane is the preferred of the two for a small dog as there is a risk of the body temperature dropping too low with sevo. If you have concerns about the process, your vet should be willing to discuss it with you. |
Yes, Isoflurane or Sevoflurane are the anesthetics of choice. The patient can be masked down with the gas and then intubated (not usually recommended unless there are extenuating circumstances) or other drugs can be used for sedation and/or intubation. Ketamine with valium or propofol are very common. |
thanks so much for the detailed info. I will call him to ask which kind he's using! |
