♥ Advice about Missy's spay please ♥ I'm just wondering what you guys think that I should do. She just had surgery to repair a fractured humeral lateral condyle 1.5 weeks ago, and her recovery time is 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks she will be 6.5 months old. When should I do her spay? It will be done by laser, but I just feel SO bad putting her through another surgery immediately after recovery from this last one. What do you all think? She is pretty little at 2 lbs 10 ozs right now, do you think her first heat will come late? I'm hearing that normally it does for these little ones. Opinions please? I'm stressing out about this! |
Aww. I can understand you not wanting to put Missy through another surgery right after this one. I can't speak for all small ones but Chloe is in her first heat now and she is 10 months , so being little Missy may not go into heat until later. I know it's important to have it done before the first heat for risk of cancer but Chloe is still so small that I was worried and wanted to wait a bit longer. On the other hand if all is well with her arm and she seems fine it may be good to go ahead and have it done so she can heal all at once with less moving around ( Like a couple of days before the cast comes off , maybe? ) |
I would ask your vet and see what he/she says. They will probably know best. If it's safe for her to undergo the surgery, I would go ahead and do it while she's still in a cast (like chloesMama said) so that you will have restricted movement while she's healing and you can get it all over with at the same time. |

Hi Shauna, I couldn't find the thread about Missy's surgery...I'm glad she's recovering! Mimi didn't have her 1st heat til 2 months after she turned 1 yr old (she's 5.5 lbs.) Maybe you should wait til she's a little older, before she turns 1 to have her spayed (maybe 8-9months?). Then you can also have any baby teeth removed that she's retained @ the same time.:p (S) & :kiss3:(S) for Lil' Missy girl! |
i'm no expert.. but i worry  SO.. i would wait. she is so little  it would scare me.. but, that's just me.. :idontknow |

Missy is just so tiny.... I wouldn't put her through another surgery anytime soon. Many people can give opinions but you are Missy's mommy and God will lead you in the right direction... just follow what your heart and your gut tells you to do and Missy will be fine. Give her loves for Gucci and I !! |

i would wait to get her spayed too :) i know you are worrying and i think if you wait until (1) she is a little older, (2) she is bigger and (3) there has been some time between her last surgery, you might feel less anxious about it ... i understand why you are worried and i would be too! i wished i had waited to get miss buffey spayed...i mean she did great and recovered very well, but she was so teeny and young (less than 3 lbs at 6 months) ... and all her teeth had not come through so now we have to put her under again to get the rest of her baby teeth out :( ... the good thing is, she just lost 2 baby teeth last week and she is almost 17 months old  ... took forever but they came out on their own...but she has a few more to come out just my opinion of course! but i would wait a while longer :) |
spaying :D hiya shaunna , poppy had her first heat when she was 8 months old , and we had her spayed when she was 11 months  just wait a bit to have missy spayed , let her leg fully recover , hope this helps you love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
Oh Geez, I feel for you. It is a tought decision. Adie was spayed when she was 7 months old. I just read her medical records and the vet had written that she was either just going into or coming out of heat. That would have been her first. I certaily didn't know about it. I think Missy would be OK since she has already been through a surgery and you know she can tolerate it. I, like almost everyone else, think you should wait until she is well-healed and you feel the time is right. Bless her little heart. I hope she is doing OK. PS Skeeter said she didn't dance at all at the ball just like he promised but she was the prettiest one there! |
ya, I think I would wait as well. the surgery and recovery process take lots of energy from her already, I would give her body sometime. and my girl Dolly did not go into her first heat until a year old, my other girl Shorty also did not get spayed until after her first heat due to some liver issues, and her vet told me I could do the spaying surgery on her right now(with all the other stress she is dealing with), but if she were mine, I would wait! |
Thank you everyone! It's nice to get other Yorkie owners opinions on this. Sometimes I feel like I'm being overly protective. I think even if I can just give her a couple of months to get over this surgery, then I'd feel better about doing it. I definitely want the spay done, it just doesn't seem right to do it right now. I've changed our vet appt to tomorrow afternoon. I'll ask her more about it then. Last time I mentioned it though, she just started rattling off the health benefits of getting her spayed before her first heat, or after her first heat, or further down the road. She's more of a "here are the facts, now make your own decision" type of vet. Thanks again, I appreciate the responses. :) |
Spaying before first heat prevents mammary gland cancer 100%. Maybe that's what your vet was referring to... Dog Spay Surgery at ThePetCenter.com . I can understand why you're so worried, cuz Missy is so small...heard that anestisia is ok for dogs up to 3lbs. Some small yorkie moms here on YT(2~3lbs & under), are waiting for their babies to get bigger to spay them. |
I just saw this post. I'm so glad you've decided to wait a bit!! |
