Anal Gland Issues We went to the vet again and Romeo had full anal glands that contained dry puss. She expressed them internally and gave him allergy liquid medication. This is the 3rd time in 3 months that he went to the vet for this problem. He has been eating Prescription Allergy Royal Canin. The vet said not to give him anything , but the prescription diet. (I was feeding him pumpkin mixed with Blue canned food for fiber) She suggests we try the allergy meds and see if they work. Has anyone had this anal gland issue? |
Joey had an anal reoccurring gland issue as a puppy, but never any infection. I'm not sure if he outgrew it, or the tsp of ground flax seed he gets each night helps. We also added about 5 green beans to his nightly meal, and this was for a diet measure the vet suggested since he had gained weight during a tricks training glass. Both of these things could affect the anal glands by increasing the "bulk", and perhaps making it easier for him to empty the anal gland contents on his own. All I really know is it use to be a monthly thing, and then it stopped. |

I wish I could remember and I am sorry I do not but I believe recently there where issue with both Nutro and Chicken Jerkey type treats with dogs, You might want to try a goodle search on them to see what you come up with. Hopefully removing both of these will solve your problem. I hope it works |
I have to have Mimi's expressed every two weeks...learned to do it myself cuz trips to the vet was getting costly. Never had an infection, so I don't know if this will help. The Anal Sacs Page Hope Romeo's allergy meds work. I don't get it, is it an allergy?:confused: |

I am unaware of allergies causeing anal gland problems. Not saying it's not possible, just that I've never heard of it. I DO know that good solid poo will normally self-express the glands. Canned food, or the soft type kibbles don't have the "right stuff". When I was (much) younger, my dogs ate canned food - and they had problems. Ever since, I've fed my dogs kibble ... and they haven't had any problems. Now, that's a GOOD kibble product, not the kind with a lot of corn or other ingredients that don't allow a good poo. |

Chester has anal glands issues just in the last year or so, I have to have a higher fiber food, he eats solid gold which is 4 percent, you can also add pumpkin to their diet to bulk up their poo and the glands have a better chance of getting exspressed, and I think I would try a different food personally, halo dog food is prestty good and 6.5 percent fiber which is pretty high and alot better than most of the specialty foods the vet recommends. The pumpkin if you try if needs to be the kind with no sugar |
