Ahh worms!
 
I left Jackson for a while today and my step-dad took good care of him, but he told me he had worms in his poop! :eek: I've always checked for them moreso when I first got him so I'm thinking he got them from eating poop. I caught him yesterday eating some poop outside and it was too late to really stop him..... gross. Can I buy my own de-worming kit at Petsmart? Is it a pill or something I give to him?

No, you need to take Jackson or a stool sample to your vet. You have to find out what kind of worms he has so you know what medication he needs.

OK, I'll take him into the vet tomorrow then, I guess.

Do you think I could just bring the stool sample to the vet without bringing Jackson? They charge a $50 exam fee every time I go there with him! And I'm fully aware puppies cost money so I don't want anyone to get on me for that, and I have the money, but I'd also like to try and save my costs as much as possible. How much is the medication the vets will usually prescribe for worms?

I am sure they will let you just bring the sample. But they will probably want to know what the dog weighs. Do you have Mosquitos in Maryland? Here in Minnesota we give the dogs pills for heartworm (nasty I know) and they prevent intestinal worms also, hook, round and tape! So a once a month pill and no worries. Lexi will get tested for heartworm next month however, because she was born in Sept (still mosquito season) and they want to make sure she is negative! Good luck with Jackson!

You should just be able to bring a stool sample in provided Jackson has been examined by the vet before. He's not a new puppy, is he?

If they are tapeworms he got them from ingesting a flea

Nope, he's been to the vet I bring him to 3 times so far so they have his stuff on file. He was just there a week in a half ago.

I'm pretty sure they're roundworms by the way my stepdad described them. He was de-wormed as a puppy before I even got him, but never after that. Are you supposed to do it more than once?

We do have mosquitos but I only ever see them in the summertime. My other dog has heartworm medicine too. If I get heartworm medicine will it remove the worms or just control it in the future?

Your vet should have done a fecal on Jackson as part of his new puppy exam. Roundworms are very common in puppies.

You should be able to just take a stool sample in since he was just seen by your vet.

I think its just once but if he got reinfested he would need to be done again. Its not a preventative it just kills the worms they have then

The info we got says for the Treatment and control. I would ask the vet. In Minnesota we have to give the heartworm pills year round as a preventative. It is just nice to not have to worry about the intestinal worms also. Our other dogs never had worms on the monthy pill. Our vet did a well puppy check within 3 days after we got Lexi. They did a fecal then.

He will probably need a couple treatments to get rid of them.

Take him to the vet. You need to find out what kind of worms he has so they can treat him for that specific worm.

I never had any experience of worms until I bought my yorkie, he was (9 month old) from another lady. He is 2lbs and she said he was to much trouble to take care of because he was so small.

But she never once took him to the vet after buying him from the breeder:eek:. The weekend I bought him I took him to the vet to make sure he was healthy and okay. Turns out he probably never had any shots and found out he had round worms:eek: So a treatment later and shots he is now very healthy and 2.5 lbs. and Worm Fee! He will be 1yr old next month.

Tapeworm!!
 
My 5 month old has tapeworm and we just used the over the counter med. Worm X plus for small dogs and puppies, I had to give her one pill that she took with no problem they said in about a week the tapeworm should just disapear. If not back to the vet for Daisy. Which is funny becuase she developed the tapeworm just 1 week after getting her deworming from the vet!(kinda odd) I have two cats but they don't have fleas not sure where she got it from. If anyone has ever had this expirence please share and let me know what worked for you.. Thanks:)

I was going to just buy over-the-counter deworming kit but I don't really know what I'm doing with that stuff so I think tomorrow morning I'm going to call the vet and see if I can just bring in a stool sample (without bringing in Jackson) and they give me the medication.

Anyone know how much a fecal test and the medicine generally cost?

OK, well, yesterday I picked up some of Jackson's poop (gross, I know lol) and put it in a baggie and didn't see any worms. I was going to take it to the vet but since I didn't see any, I decided to wait until his next poop. I did the same thing this morning, don't see any worms. Is it even possible for them to have worms but for them NOT to show up in their poop? I asked my step-dad are you SURE you saw worms when you were watching him? And he just goes "Uh, I mean, I think. Maybe he was something he ate." A whole lot of help right? lol. Jeez.
