how often should dentals be done? my girl Dolly is about to turn three in a few days, yah!! she's got a dental when she was a year and a half. and now I think she is in need of one again, I do keep up with regular cleaning plus petz life gel twice a week, but since she eats mainly can food (rabbit meat only:D) and is not a big chewer, plus due to her petite size, she didn't have good teeth to start with (puppy teeth did not fall out and adult teeth grown in all kinds of direction, got surgery done to pull out the puppy ones). Im wondering, how often should dentals be done? is ayear and a half apart too often or is it okay? I really do want to keep her teeth as healthy as possible since they are so important and she has to stay with them for the rest of her life!:rolleyes: thanks in advance! |
It depends on the individual dog and how well their teeth are taken care of at home. Yorkies tend to need them more often and can have tartar build up after less than 6 months while other may need very few in a life time. As long as you brush often, feeding soft food isn't a problem. In fact, no matter the diet, their teeth should be brushed. Ellie hasn't had one in 16 months and her vet said her teeth look excellent. |
I would say do it as little as possible. Layla will be 3 in March and hasn't had it done- that being said- I do think some dogs- because of their saliva- require it less often than others. However, I also think that by brushing daily you can reduce the amount of times she will need to go under... and because our babies are so small you really want to limit that. Layla eats home cooked food and her back molars have a bit of tartar build up but we brush them extra hard every morning :) |
It really depends on the dog. My two have actually never had dentals and they are 4 1/2 years old. They both had baby teeth extracted as puppies due to them not falling out on their own, but they've never had to have their teeth cleaned. I hope they hever have to actually be put under for a dental. They both eat Nature's Variety raw medallions. I brush their teeth and use Petzlife gel. And they occasionally get bully stix and have nylabones to chew on. I fed a prey model raw diet for a couple months and the raw bones are great for their teeth, but i decided i was too lazy too keep up with prey model LOL. Anyway, they both have great teeth. Lacy has some very mild tarter on a couple teeth, but I'm hoping the petzlife gel will get that off..i haven't been using it as often as i should. |
well, Dolly's problem is that her teeth aren't straight, they are pointing at all different angles:rolleyes: (just about every single one of her adult teeth was affected by her poor puppy teeth, a surgery was done to pull them out, but the vet could not straighten them much) its very hard to brush/get to certain areas of some teeth, and thats where the tartar buildups are. I tried to use a dental scraper with petz life gel but she certainly did not like it/did not let me do it again:( I really hate it for her to go under, but on the other hand I really don't want to wait till the problem gets worse to a point that they have to extract the teeth or something:( |
