Throwing up Hairballs
 
My six year old Yorkie, who has long hair has been throwing up hairballs.
This has happened about once a week, but I did not know it was hair until last night. It was very obvious. I called my vet when this first started, and he said sometimes they eat grass and vomit, due to a sensitive stomach. She never
did this before until just the last month or so.

I am on my way to get some Laxatone at the vet's so that will help coat her stomach, and make the passing of hair easier. I brush her alot, but will do it more often now that I know what is happening.

I thought only cats had this problem. Does your Yorkie vomit hairballs?

I never heard of a dog doing that, I have not had that problem with my li'l girl and he hair is long. I hope things work out for you.

Tobie has done that before but only once, I didnt know dogs did that either untill I saw him.

Nolee is always coughing up grass! Hair balls, no but grass! Not sure what this would mean!

I actually did a search on YT to find out if anyone has been having this hairball problem!! This has been going on at our house for past two days with our pregnant yorkie. Last night I almost called the ER vet cause she started acting CRAZY sniffing all along the edges of the walls, chairs, everything and making hacking sounds for about an hour. Her abdomen seemed hard as a rock and blown up like a balloon! I thought maybe bloat, and I even burped her like a baby. Then she started tooting from the other end (a lot, lol) and seemed to be all better. She coughed up a couple hairballs, which I thought was odd, but dismissed it, till the whole thing happened again tonight. And tonight it was A LOT MORE HAIR. She seems ok, but I am calling vet tomorrow to be sure, and I am gonna get her cut down. She needs a haircut anyway before the babies are born. Boy am I glad not to be the only one who is going through this, but what to do? I will post again after talking to vet, maybe its something simple that we should be doing...

Ok, this thread is about hairballs, and I dont want to change the subject, but I took Princess to vet this morning for the hairball and acting wierd issue, and next thing I know she is staying there for 4 hrs while vet runs bloodwork, thinks she has pyometra instead of puppies. Or both, But the furthest thing from his mind is the hairball issue. I am glad I took her but now I might lose her and I am scared. Sorry I dont think I will be much help as far as the hairball issue.:cry8:

I am so very very sorry to hear this. What is pyometra? I need to look it up on the internet.

Did the vet originally say she was pregnant?

Please keep us posted, and good luck with Princess. I wish there was something I could do.

ok, run down on situation...hubby decided to mate Princess with maltese mix down the street, and she tied with him 42 days ago. All signs pointed to her being pregnant (although what do I know, Im not a breeder) so when I took her to vet for the hairball issue, i told him we thought she was preggers, he ran bloodwork, and came back with pyometra diagnosis (explained in previous post). I really suspected puppies so I had ultrasound done, and we saw one heartbeat for sure, so yes, she IS pregnant. Now I dont wanna spay. I did go to the breeder section and post a thread for possible pyometra and pregnancy at same time and yes, it is possible, and it can be dangerous. So now I am being very cautious, and am trying to figure out best way to handle situation. It may be a c-section, if she can carry to term. I hope some more people see the thread, cause EllieMay seems so much smarter than me, a lot of it is going over my head,lol. I just know this is serious...

Ok, now enuf about Princess, God will take care of her...lets get back to hairballs. I do know that my girl chews her feet and probly swallows some hair, but she is pregnant, so that probly is a whole different situation altogether. Cause I have noticed her shedding a little.
What I am wondering is if we can give them something to make the hairballs pass through their system. Like a cat. Anybody hear of that? (Since I will be at the vet on monday anyway, I will ask about this and post when I find out anything)

How is Princess doing today?

I called my vet when this happened, and the receptionist said I could give her Laxatone once a week, and it will help pass the hairballs.

But, I am holding off because she threw up such a big hairball, that I am thinking this may be the end of it. At least for a long time I hope. It has
never happened before.

I think cats take the same medication.

Please let me know what the vet says on Monday.

Princess is fine except for some discharge, as of bedtime tonight, will know more on monday and be sure to let you all know...
I thought there was some hairball remedy stuff you put on the cats paws and they lick it off, like vaseline, and I am wondering if that is what they give the dogs?

Not sure, but will be anxious to hear what you find out Monday.

Sadie licks her paws constantly. I understand the Laxatone helps coat their stomachs so the hairballs can pass easily.

Hey thats a coincidence, Princess chews her feet a lot too. Hmmm, I bet I know where the hair is comin from...maybe we should keep their feet trimmed better? I dunno.

Its morning and she is trying to lick her vagina but she cant reach it. (Cause she's got the wide load goin:p) Which I would normally think is funny except she doesnt seem to wanna bounce up the stairs like normal. I will watch her and maybe get her in today.

Did Princess get to the vet today? How far along is she? How long do Yorkies carry their babies?

I am curious as to what you found out.
