Not crazy about bully sticks So we bought our guy a bully stick yesterday and he wasn't crazy about it. He walked about with it a bit, and hid it, but mostly looked at it like he didn't know what to do with it. Also the smell was unbearable. I heard westbookdog.com has one's that don't smell, should I try those? |
Mine didnt act they liked them at first when I got them either but I left them out and they ended up chewing on them |
Try putting a little peanut butter on it...It will be more enticing:)...Good luck!!! |
Mine also weren't crazy about them at first, but they love them now. Unfortunately for my pups I recently found out via our friends here at YT that these are made from a bulls...rhymes with stick. Yuck! Not sure if I have it in me to buy these again, LOL. |

I just ordered some of the 6.5 ones from her. I just started giving Bully Sticks to Max in place of Dingo rawhide bones and it is taking him some time to get used to them. I read on here how bad rawhide could be so I switched to Bully Sticks. |
I took mine back to "Petsmart". He was acting like he was on drugs with it, literally~! I've never seen him act so cra-zy before. Has anyone else experienced such a thing~? |
Nikko didn't want much to do with his at first either, and he's not much of a power-chewer to begin with (he prefers tug-of-war with stuffed animals). We tried a couple different brands, then eventually got one of the curly spiral ones... those are overall thinner and also easier to hold on to (we cut them in half, he's 4lbs), and so I think they were much easier for him to enjoy. Then we tried AMD's (westbrookdog), and they are a bit softer and much much much less stinky. That one is his current favorite, and we're looking forward to buying more from her - hopefully some of the curly ones. Lauren & Nikko |
Pao doesn't really like bullysticks either. When he was a pup, he would chew on them from time to time but now..not anymore. He was never a chewer to begin with but I wish he would chew on it a little when he is bored but he never does. The only time he likes them is when another dog has chewed them soft and he eats them. |
I got Jackson his first bully stick a few days ago and he LOVED it! It was form Petsmart and it wasn't too smelly, I didn't think. It was one of those curly ones or whatever. |
I think your lil guy might need sometime to test the bullies, every new treat/chew I introduce to my girls, it took them sometime to get use to the smell/flavor then they would fall in love with the treats LOL or you can try to get the fish sticks which my girl Dolly loves, and it comes in a more yorkie friendly size. she's not a big fan of bullies either, she would chew for less than two mins and give it up! |
alternative to bullies and rawhides My baby loves bullies, but she also loves sweet potato chews, which have the added benefit of being GOOD for her :) I first purchased them at my vet's office, but now just order them from Pet Boutique - Dog Pet Store Supply They are called Bichon Fries. |
Just as a thought.... you could try soaking (for about 5-10 min) one end of the bully stick in hot water or hot (unsalted) chicken broth... sometimes that makes Nikko a bit more interested in working on it. We did that once with a bully stick, and then within 15 minutes of him chewing at it, he had it dwon to another two inches past where we'd soaked it. Other times though, it didn't entice him at all... you never know. Lauren & Nikko |
