Trapped Wind and Diet Issues! Hello, I wonder if you can help me at all. my Yorkie is two years old and he has been having alot of gas or wind (farting) lately and has had some constipation. He is getting it quite regular and it upsets him and he shakes (I think it must be stomache cramps). To help himself he stretches out and down with his legs and he seems happier after doing this a few times. I wonder if it is his diet. I used to give him just plain chicken every day and cheese.....(I wonder if I should stop the cheese). I have started giving him a premium dog food (wet) and wonder if it is too much. I also give him bits of milk chocolate....sorry, I know I shouldn't. It is very difficult getting him to eat as he is so little and only only weighs 4.5lbs (the vet seemed to think he is underweight) and I do to. How can I stop the wind, get him to eat more, be healthier and put on some weight? I am worried about him and his diet leaves alot to be desired. I just wish he would eat more! Is this a common problem with Yorkies. Desperate for some advise! Thanks Lisa |
I wouldnt give him any Human food for awhile just dog food and see what happens. If he still has gas you may want to change the food. And you know dogs cant have chocolate so dont give that anymore. Mine never have gas so think it is a matter of finding a food that agrees with them. Good luck |
It sounds like something is really wrong here. You can try canned pure pumpkin for the constipation but it seems that would just be covering up an underlying problem. Some foods don't agree with some dogs and they can cause gas. You can try changing the food but at this point I'd consider gettng some testing done. Shaking can be from the normal (cold or scared), it can be from food moving through the intestines and causing pain or it could be something else...possibly neurological. Not only is it a good idea not to give chocolate, it can be very dangerous to dogs. It can cause neurologic symptoms and even death. Dogs should NEVER be given chocolate. |

I would really try to get this looked into, as it sounds like he is in pain. What premium food are you feeding, exactly, and what foods have you tried in the past? Maybe it is an ingredient that is bothering him. If for 2 years you were giving mostly just plain chicken and cheese for the diet, his system is likely out of balance quite a bit - and getting him on a proper diet could help a lot. Chocolate can kill a dog, like Crystal said. |
Hi I stopped giving him cheese yesterday and no chocolate treats. I just gave him plain chicken, rice and some veg and he is much better this now. I will have to make sure I give him the best diet I can. In future, I will try a little cottage cheese instead of cheese but he loves cheese so much. It is difficult feeding such a small Yorkie as he doesn't eat much anyway and he gets bored with the same foods over and over. I have also researched that the dog foods on the market are full of chemicals and rubbish and we should just feed dogs fresh meat, rice and veg. Anyway, I will be more responsible for now on and be "cruel to be kind" even though he does love junk food! |
