How does one tell if their yorkie is fat...... His belly isn't dragging the ground:cool:. He is almost 5 months. I remember someone saying that you should be able to feel their ribs through a layer of fat and I can't feel his ribs anymore at all. He isn't very active. He hates walking but he will play fetch all day long. He is still a puppy so isn't it okay? |
How much does he weigh? |
4lbs maybe 4.5 Correction he is 5 months old. He is approaching 6 months. |
It's impossible for them to get too fat at this age, if you are just feeding healthy food. They need a little extra fat, because they grow in spurts. Around the age of 8 months or so, you will have a better idea of their proper adult weight. I had to ask the vet to tell me what Joey should weigh, because during a trick training class he gained too much weight, almost a full pound more than he should weight, but I couldn't tell, he looked great to me. |

I will stick to wellness treats from this point forward. |
Just think of a puppy under the age of 8 months, like a baby or toddler, they need a little chub on them to be healthy, no one thinks a "lean" baby is good. An adult, however, is healthier if lean. |
This is what my vet told me: (1) Make a fist and feel your knuckles...If their back/ribs feel like this = under weight (2) Put your hand straight out & palm down and feel your knuckles...If their back/ribs feel like this = Just right (3) Put your hand straight out & palm up and feel your "knuckles"...If their back/ribs feel like this = over weight Just advice :aimeeyork our vet gave us on how to tell |
