Strange behavior..HELP I have a question about our Yorkie. He is 1 1/2yrs old, and we have had him since he was 12wks old. He always had trouble housebreaking, needs to be watched all the time. He needs to be let out hourly when not in his pen, which seems to be working well until this week. He urinated on the couch last week with all of us sitting on it!! And tonight, to my horror, he jumped in my lap a urinated all over me!! It had not been an hour since he was out last, so I don't know what is going on. I am at my wits end, and thinking of re-homing him to someone who can get a better handle on his behavior and spend more time with him. Two other glitches: I am highly allergic to the dog, so being around him for long periods of time is difficult, but do-able. After tonight's "accident" I broke out in hives and itched for the rest of the night...it was not a happy event!! Also, my daughter got a kitten last week. They seem to get along well, and run around the house chasing eachother. The kitten was not around when the dog acted out tonight though. Someone tell me what is happening!! Thanks:confused: |
Is he neutuered. The peeing on your lap sounds like him marking his territory. |
ewwww, yes he is neutered. I don't know what this was about. It wasn't a small amount either! The other issue, our couch is less than 2yrs old! We struggle with training and allowing him enough freedom to roam, but when will that end?? things are getting worse, not better! I'm really frustrated right now... |
You say he is urinating hourly? Is he drinking lots of water? Have you had him checked for diabetes? |
Do you give him some kind of super awesomely delicious treat immediately after he pees/poos outside (don't wait till you get back inside!), something reserved especially just for that extra special deed? We've been using peanut butter baking chips lately at the advice of another YT member, which have been working really well for us. I know they're not the healthiest thing in the world, but peeing inside just isn't healthy for any of us owners' sanities either! :-) Lauren & Nikko |

Has the marking got worse since the kitten come to live with you? :confused: |
Have the vet check him for any problems but does he pee alot when ever he gets excited or when you come home? It could be a form of submission pee Some dogs do this to some extent |
Thoughts... It seems that he has urinated more frequently since the kitten came home since he has NEVER done this before. He is neutered, so I didn't think that was going to happen. He doesn't seem to drink more than usual and is still just as active as usual. I can't have him urinating on our new couch. It took us years to budget for new furniture and I don't want it smelling like urine in the summer so whatever this is, we need to get a handle on it now. BTW-he had a vet check and updated shots at the end of December and everything was ok....I'm sad that we just can't seem to handle this dog.... |
Since he is going in places that aren't normal for him, he needs to be seen so the vet can rule out a UTI and/or stones. Other than that, Yorkies are hard to potty train and some do mark even after neutering. Since you are allergic to him and you frustrated about his issues, maybe rehoming would be the best option. |
If it started when the kitten came I'd say that's your answer, but if not I'd listen to Ellie May. |
Ok, so if this is a "marking" behavior, how do we change it? We don't want to rehome him, if possible we would like to train him and make him more a part of our family. He spends more time than I would like in a pen because we can't trust him. He will sneak off and poo in an upstairs room or pee in a corner. Now we have to worry about our furniture too? He use to be "safe" in the rooms we were in, but that changed too I mean...he urinated in my LAP, not a little leak, a big puddle! He doesn't piddle when excited (my mother had a cocker spaniel who did) He is holding his urine all night and while we are out at work, so I don't think it's and illness. So...what to do?? |

Ok, I'll call the vet in the morning and see what she says. She just did a basic exam, no blood work though. It is unusual for him to urinate in front of us. He doesn't HAVE to go out every hour, I just let him out to make sure he doesn't go in the house. The first time he wet the couch he was running around being chased by the kitten and jumped up on the couch and went pee. the second time was last night, kitten was no where to be seen, but he does always sleep on me (the kitten). hummmm |
