HELP...my baby girl's eye is hurting Hello, I am desperate for help. My baby girl is keeping her eye shut most of the time. She has some goo coating her eye. I have tried to keep it as clean as possible, but today she yelped when I tried to clean it out. I have taken her to the vet many times over this and we are on our second tube of antibiotic ointment...I am getting scared this may result in permanent damage. The vet does not seem as concerned as I am. We have another appointment Tues. :( Can anyone give me some insight as to what may be causing this? |
So sorry about your little girl's eye. I am not an expert in the health area, wish I could help. Hopefully, someone on YT will be able to discuss this with you. Glad you are taking her to the vet. Also, wanted to say Welcome. |
Do you wash her face daily? Is there possibly some hair hitting her eyes? I know I have to keep the hair around Lola's eyes trimmed or they run like crazy! Could she be allergic to her food? What kind of food are you feeding? Poor baby. I hope she feels better soon! |
Has he put dye in her eye to make sure there isn't an injury? Eyes are serious...personally since this vet seems unconcerned, I'd be getting another opinion. |
I'd find another vet asap. See if you can get a referral to an opthamalogist. She could have a corneal ulcer or KCS. Both conditions are easily treatable, but can cause serious damage to the eye if left untreated. Corneal Ulcers In Dogs and Cats And Their Treatment In ThePetCenter.com. KCS (Dry Eye) |
Oh no, this sounds very painful for your little girl. I hope that you can get some help for her quick. I too would be looking for another vet. Obviously something is wrong if the eye is acting like this and your vet needs to be concerned. I hope she feels better. :) |
A warm, wet washcloth may help to loosen the goo. Just lay it on there for a minute before gently wiping. I love baby washcloths because they are so much softer than regular ones. Vet Opthomologists are hard to find. I have to drive 2 hours each way to see one. Have they tested her for Dry eye? PS WELCOME |
Did your vet use the flouresanct dye is the eye and also check around the back of the eye to see of there might be something stuck toward the back of the eye? If you have been using eye drops for 2 weeks and it's getting worse it's probably time to get a second opinion. Bogey has something in his eye about 2 1/2 weeks ago and when I took him in, the vet prescribed antibiotic. It sounds very similar to Bogey with the discharge and squinting but unlike you, I saw a huge improvement within a day or so and now his eye is totally healed. So with the same time frame your little guy should also be feeling much better too. Have you called the vet in the past 2 weeks to let him know that you think he is getting worse? I wouldn't wait until Tuesday for a follow up. Either take him back tomorrow or go for a second opinion. :animal36 |
Thanks for the reply. She eats Iams puppy...the only dry food she seems to like. She is very picky. I do not wash her face everyday, but will from now on. |

Joey had a corneal ulcer that started out with a squinting, they did the green dye test, and found the ulcer, the ointment cleared it up pretty fast, but he had to wear a cone to prevent him from scratching the area and re-injuring it. The can scratch can their eye or rub their faces too hard on carpet, and scratch the eye. I bought some Petsilk Topknot gel to keep those pesky hairs out of his eyes, don't use human products they aren't safe for dogs. I've had two kinds of eye ointments; the Gentak worked much faster than the Vetropolycin. You really need to have her wear a cone while it's healing. |

I am taking her somewhere tomorrow. I feel guilty letting her go through today like this but the only vet open on sunday within 60 miles is a Banfield in a Petsmart. I have heard such terrrible things about them I am afraid to take her. |
Years ago I had a cairn terrier whose eye was watery and goopy. I took her to the vet after a couple of days and he put some dye in her eye and you could see that the eye was scratched. The vet asked if we had a cat, which we did. He said that it was a serious scratch which a cat could very easily do. The poor baby had to stay for a hospital visit. They treated her with IV antibiotics and had to sew the eye shut (for a week or so) because they were afraid that it could explode. I felt so bad that I waited a couple of days before going to the vets. I just had no clue that a watery eye could be so seriously injured. I think you should get a second opinion. |
