DHPP every 3 weeks for pups? Hi, we have 2 13 week old female pups. They have been to the vet twice for their normal shots. The vet recomends a DHPP for the pups every 3 weeks until 6 months old. We never did this with our now adult dogs when they were pups, same vet. Is this really necessary? Maybe they found that it works better, or is it just to get more vet visits? |
woah- sounds like WAY overvaccinating to me! |

Can you find a new vet? That is waaaaaaaaaaay too many vaccines. Pups need 1-4 sets of distemper, parvo and hepatits depending on when they are started. The normal is often considered 3. Those would be at 8, 12 and 16 weeks although some people prefer to start later. These vaccines are given every 3-4 weeks until pup shots are complete. Giving only 1 set should only be done if you have extreme confidence in when you are giving it and your vet is familiar with the newest research. |

YOU NEED A NEW VET! That is FAR Too much vaccine ESPECIALLY for toy breeds- they are just TOO tiny. |
We have a 3-month-old Maltese puppy, and our vet is only going to give him three shots because she thinks he's a little small to get four. Does your vet work with a lot of small dogs? Our little ones come with their own issues, and it's best to have a vet who knows you can't treat a Yorkie the same way you'd treat a lab. |
Too small That is one of my concerns, one of the pups is pretty small. I found another website stating every 3 weeks until 4 months. Size of the dog would seem important to me. 3 times might be enough times though for a little one. |
wow...until 6 months! That's crazy... Most give a total of 3 combo vaccines to puppies, being given 3-4 weeks apart, until 16 weeks of age. If you start at a later age, 2 combo vaccines can be enough protection. The only reason you should have to give 4 combo vaccines is if the puppy was vaccinated for the first time too early (under 8 weeks of age). Any vaccines given before 8 weeks of age are usually no good as maternal antibodies persist for 8-12 weeks. |
Here in Pa. they give them @ 6,9 and 12 weeks. They give an extra if you're going to show @ 6 months. The Rabies is given @ 6 months and the first one is good for 1 year then 3 years after that...:animal-pa |
