Tear Ducks too small?? Not sure which thread this should go in... my yorkie isn't sick or anything I just have a question. Have any of you heard before that your Yorkie's Tear Ducks could be a bit small or even a bit clogged and that they could grow out of it or it can be fixed later on? My Evie is small (a bit over 2lbs) and when we brought her home she was 1.6lbs and when the vet checked her Evie looked like she was crying... she told us that her tear ducks were just so small and would grow with rest of her and the tears (or the luck of crying) would go away... and if not when she is fixed they could put something in them to de-clog them (sp?)...LOL Anyways... the last two weeks (Evie has gained some weight since then) she didnt appear to look like she was crying... but last night I noticed when I got home that her eyes looked like she was crying again. I try to keep her dry so she doesn't get a rash (the Vet suggested this)... but is this common for a small dog?? My Alfie never had this problem... he has always been a big boy. |
Ive heard of them being clogged but not too small |
I have not heard of tear ducts being too small either. You might want to get a second opinion. I would be more worried about an obstruction or perhaps dry eyes causing reflex tearing. Dry eyes are uncomfortable. |
okay not to sound stupid... but would dry eye... look like she is crying? (not very dry)... She doesnt itch at them or show any signs that she can't see... honestly you wouldnt even notice it in her eyes... you notice it on her fur under her eyes... (does that make sense?) And I guess if she had white fur it would be VERY noticable... but with her being dark it looks like she is wet. |
Usually yorkies do have mucus in the corners of their eyes. I have to get the eye buggers (that is what we call them) when I brush and groom them. One of mine had wetter corners of her eyes when she was a pupply. Maybe it is hair that is sticking in the eye and causing it to water. You can use mouse or vasaline to train the hair away from the eyes. I wouldn't cut the hair in the corners unless you want to do it from now on. My older girl had this done and now hers won't lay down good like my younger one. I would think that it is possible for them to have clogged tear ducts or too small tear ducts. Human babies can have this and sometimes grow out of it or require surgery to open them. My friends daughter had to have this done. So it is probably possible with dogs also. |
Thank you!! What you said is basically what the Vet was trying to say I think.. and most likely I am worrying about something that is not a big deal... I just get worried because I dont know any better... my Vet is really really nice and I think because she is so Jolly :) I take it as flighty... LOL:rolleyes: With the tears going away for a couple weeks then coming back it has made me think that it could be bothering her (under the fur where the wetness meets her skin... she has a tiny-not-red rash almost flaky like that may be bothering her from it...) so I have decided to make an appointment to get it looked at again. The Vaseline idea is great too, thank you!! I am going to try that as her fur is growing out but is in her eyes often when she is playing... I made an appointment for Next Tuesday Night... I can't wait to go to find out what else I can do to help her. My poor baby. :( Quote:
