Fast Eater .... Hi :) I hope someone can help me with my problem!!! My 12 week old Yorkie eats sooooo fast! He is still on soft food as of right now and we are feeding him every four hours --the vet told us to do this because he had really low blood sugar when we first got him. Our normal routine is to sit down in front of him when we feed him. We put the bowl down and he scarfs it down so fast we have to take it away from him for a little bit so he can take a breath! I don't want him to choke on his food or anything. And I really don't want him to get sick from eating so fast. We also try to feed him a few pieces of hard food but he seems to just swallow them. And we have to feed him one piece at a time. I don't know if it's because we are feeding really tiny pieces of food or what? I don't know if we should give him slightly larger pieces of food. But he gets SO excited over food, he doesn't think about anything else but food! I am worried if we were to put a small bowl of hard food down he would just try to eat them all at once and not chew any of them up. Does anyone have the same problem? Or know of something to help him be more calm about his food? I don't want his eating habits to cause health problems or anything... any advice would be great! Thanks!! |
Our Clarence used to inhale is food. Since we put them on a really healthy food...he has slowed down. Don't know why, but he has. If he's on soft...& this might sound gross but put it in your hand & make him work for it. |
That might be something to try. He just goes nuts-o over his food. He is on Innova canned food. and the small hard food we try - halo puppy food. and the larger pieces is the innova hard puppy food! thanks for the advice! |

I think it was Chachi who I heard this brilliant idea from - but try putting a golf ball in his bowl while he's eating, this may slow the punkin' down a bit. :) |
thanks! I will have to try all these things! |
I've heard from a girl I work with that trying to make them work for their food usually helps. This may sound silly, but trying wrapping the hard food in a towl and make him work to find it. Or you could try hiding pieces of food so he'll hunt for them. I've personally never tried them myself as my furbaby is a picky eater, but supposedly it's supposed to help them slow down a little bit. |

Im getting better ideas as the day goes on! Thanks!!! And I think he would hunt for it too, cause he can smell the food a mile away! lol :) |
The golf ball trick works I have did it with my Chachi |
for some reason.......yorkies that are feed on a schedule seem to eat faster than those that are free fed...........when we first got your female she had been schedule fed.......boy can she warf it down.......but since we got her to free feed like our male............she seems a little slower when given soft....but now when they get their treat of a spoon of vanilla icecream..........she eats hers in one bite.....lol.......the widdle piggy |
golf balls and tennis balls work really well. I have never had a fast eater, but I was always told to use golf or tennis balls.:animal-pa |
