Feeding Guidance
 
Hello all you yorkie lovers,

I just got my 18 wk old baby, Youkie, about 2 weeks ago. I switched his food to Iams Smart Puppy Proactive health (dry). The first week when I mixed the new with his previous food (Biljac), he seemed to like it.

Now after 2 days of eating Iams alone, mixed with a little water (2 tblsp) he doesn't seem to eat as well. At night I mix his food with a 1/2 tsp of crushed pinapples (told this was a good deterent for stopping him from eating his poop). He eats this portion a little better, until he's gotten all the pinapples out.

I feed him according to the weight guide on the packaging, 1 1/2 cup a day ( 1/2 cup 3x a day) and he only eats about 1/4 cup each feeding... if that. What am I doing wrong? :confused:

Thanks for any and all help you can provide, regarding the appropriate amount to feed, mixing the dry food with water, adding the pinapples to the food, etc. :)

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. He maybe just doesn't really like the IAMS as much. I have heard that the pinapple can help with stool eating, so if it's helping, stick to it. I think 1/4 cup 3x daily is plenty for a 18week old puppy. I've never heard of a yorkie eating 1 1/2 cups per day, but I'm no expert. IAMS isn't a very high quality food so the feeding guidlines may need to be higher. I free feed, and mine eat approx. 1/4 cup daily.

Hello and welcome to YT :D!

I think if this were my puppy and he 1) wasn't liking the food much and 2) he was eating his poo -- I'd switch the food. Iams is not a very good food and your pup may be pooping out some of less digestable ingredients, making his poo still smell like food - hence, he wants to eat it. :rolleyes:

Where are you able to get dog food? Just Petsmart/Petco? Or do you have feed stores or premium petfood stores near you? :)

I had fiona on the same puppy food, and at first she didnt like it, but then she loved it....i typically was always told to feed puppies three times a day.....if you have concerns call your vet!!!!! :aimeeyork

Thank you for the info. I purchased his food from Petco. No, I thought Petco or Petsmart was a better place to purchase food than Walmart or the supermarket. Should he be eating something better? I thought Iams was good brand food. What would you reccommend? And where would you suggest I purchase his food?

Thanks for the info. So, how much do you feed Fiona? How long did it take before she began to like the Iams food? Do you mix in anything or add water to soften the dry food a bit.

Oh, by the way, I notice you're in Bear, De. We don't live to far apart. I assume you get your Iams food from the pet store in Governor's Square.

Iams is not a high quality food. The second ingredient, Corn Meal and the third ingredient Chicken By-Product Meal are both ingredients best avoided. The first ingredient IS chicken, but this meat is inclusive of water content, and once that is removed, would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list. (ingredients are listed in order of weight.) That leaves Corn Meal to be the main ingredient. :thumbdown However, if it said chicken MEAL, it would be exclusive of water content.
I think the foods at PetSmart are better than Walmart, but the best foods are found at pet stores? Do you have any in your area? Foods I'd recommend are Innova EVO, Origin, Wellness CORE, and Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken.

You seem very knowledgeable about what to look for in the food contents. Can you enlighten me about corn and other ingrediants I should stear clear of? Also, any info you can provide regarding good treats I can use for training would also be appreciated.

You are welcome! PetSmart and Petco are petstores, but they are big box stores, and you'll want to look for smaller upscale pet boutiques.

I know very little in the grand scheme of things, but I always try to help in the ways I can. ;) There are others here who know much more than I do.

Corn is not inherently bad, but the corn products dog food manufactures use are merely fillers. Fillers hold little to no nutritional value and are the remains of corn after the nutritious part has been removed. Corn is not a natural part of a dog's diet, and is also one of the top allergy ingredients. I personally stear clear of dog food containing corn products.

"By-product" is something you always want to avoid. Meat by-products are parts of the animal not including meat.

I personally like to see the first 2 (or more) ingredients to be meat products, with at least one being a meat meal. If only the first ingredient is a meat product, but it's a meat meal, I can go for that. A shorter list of ingredients is a good thing.

Regarding treats, Buddy Biscuits come to mind as well as Zukes Mini Naturals. They're both healthy treats, but you basically just have to find whatever motivates your pup! :D If you have a Petco around, they have good treats. Both mentioned above I believe they carry. ;) YT member Chattiesmom makes treats called "yorkie yummies". You may try those as well. Good luck.
