belly rash Hi Everyone! I'm new just joined today. I'm having a problem with my little yorkie Max. He's about 9 years old (not sure he was abandoned at my husbands work) and has a horrible rash on his belly. Its red, brown and crusty. Its spread to his back legs and he's constantly licking it. Actually he's started constantly licking his paws too. I can't afford to take him to the vet. Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone experience this with there dog? THanks! Crystal |
First off...Welcome to YT and bless you for taking him in. Can you post a picture of what it looks like. Have you bathed him? What are you feeding him. I can be a number of things causing the rash. Did he have it when you took him in? |
He's been eating the same food since we've had him. Sorry I didn't mention that we have had him for about 4 years now. I'll try to post a pic later. He developed it about 2 months ago. we have since bath him(a soothing oatmeal soap for dogs) and took him to a groomer. Nothing really did change, and with the constant licking i think he's spreading it. I should also mention that before this started I was in a habit of giving him milk. not much maybe a tablespoon or so, but since have stopped, but still with with no relief. |
If its spreading he could have mange and it can only be treated by a vet. The only way to know for sure is your vet doing a skin scrape |
Awww, poor Max.:( My Sugar developed a belly rash and was licking his paws a lot. The vet did a skin scraping and determined he had staph which required antibiotics. He was also looking for yeast which wasn't present. He was diagnosed with environmental allergies and is currently on medication for that. Sugar is 4 and has never had allergies so they can develop out of nowhere. I hate to say it but really your only option is to have a vet see him. If you try to hold out and treat him yourself he could end up with infection or other complications that will just end up costing you more (in addition to his discomfort and well being). In the meantime make sure you aren't feeding him anything with wheat or corn just in case it's a food allergy. Good luck- I really sympathize because it's been a pain getting Sugar's allergies managed. Welcome to YT!:) |
belly rash/vet Can I treat mange with an over the counter product? Does anyone know of a good Vet in the Chicagoland area? |
awww your poor baby must be miserable. Can you try an e-collar and something like cortisone cream for a few days to see if that helps if he cannot lick it. I know you can give him 2mls of benedryl childrens formula to maybe help with the itchiness. Ultimately I would just have to take him to the vet, he is obviously suffering and if it gets worse and you do take him it could cost MORE in the long run than it would now. Try to find a vetrinary clinic vs an animal hospital, they seem to be a bit more affordable. |

Sorry to hear about your baby, Does he have any hair loss or any other symptoms? It can be allergies, thyroid, cushing or many other things. I would try and find away to get him seen by a vet to make sure what you are dealing with. |
