When would a puppy be safe from hypoglycemia? I guess I'm not asking when they will be immune, but when you can sort of let your guard down. A certain age? Certain weight? Duration after move? I am a worry wart because my baby had it a few days after moving in with us at 13 weeks. He's almost 15 weeks now and is almost 2.5 lbs. I've been forcing the Nutri-Cal on him and feeding him lots of sugar with his water. He's gained half a pound in the last two weeks. |
chester never had these issues but I would think when he is closer to maybe 4 lbs and when he is is a little older, but if they get sick I think that could do it as well. |
If he had it at 13 weeks (a bit old to start it), I would be very cautious at least until he is full grown. That doesn't mean he needs to live on Nutrical though. He should be eating a quality food (possibly canned) every one to four hours (depends on the dog). Nutrical is good but it may not be a good idea to continuously give large amounts. |
I think it all depends on the dog, and what his/her ideal weight is going to be. Like Bella is 4.7 pounds full grown, and Bernie is 10 full grown. So the weight where I didn't worry about low sugar was different for each one of them. I don't think you need to force a lot of sugar in the water though. Just a little Nutrical in the food is sufficient, and frequent small meals during the day will help (like 4x daily) keep the energy level up. Keep the Nutrical on hand, sounds like you know the signs of hypoglocemia, so you'll be ok. The stress of the rehoming could have caused the onset of that low. |
My boys never ever had a problem. I never knew what it even was until they were over a year old. I free feed them, there is ALWAYS food and water out for them. I work full time and they are home alone during the day. I would hate to put them on scheduled feedings when noone is there during the day should they get hungry. |

I too recommend free feeding, however you still need to make sure your little one is eating enough. I have always left dry food down and supplemented with a small amount canned food 2 to 3 times a day. |
Cali had her last episode at 8 months but she was a very poor eater. Just make sure he is eating frequnetly and supplement the nutrical. I would ask your vet about sugar in the water because when I got Cali the breeder was giving her marshmallows and told me to continue(should have been a red flag) when she ended up in the ER a few days later they tols me to stop the marshmallows because something about bringing her sugar up and then crashing. Just keep a close eye on him and hopefully he won't have any more episodes. |
