Picky Yorkie Eater? How can I get him to eat more? I've had my Romeo for a little over a week now. He was on Eukaneuba as that was what the breeder had him eating (with water to soften the kibbles) He ate that for about 2 days and now he doesn't even look at his Kibbles. I switched it up by adding Cesars wet food. He would pick out the wet food and leave the kibbles behind. Cesars lasted 2 days as well. Now I am throwing kibbles around on the floor and he would fetch it. He takes about 10 kibbles per playtime/feeding and I will only do this 2 times a day. I thought he was supposed to eat 3-4 times a day? There is always food on the ground and I am hoping he would eat when I am not looking, but it's not happening. What can I do to get him to eat regularly? He had a case of hypolglycemia and was rushed to ER. My vet did not tell me about Nutri-Cal and I went out and bought a tube shortly after lurking on this forum. I also have sugar in his water so that his glucose is not low again. |
well after he is settled into your house- i woudl change his food. Both Eukanuba and caesars is not good food and could cause health issues later on. If you are interested in finding a really great food try any of the follwoing: Orijen, Natural Balance, Wellness, Halo. All of these foods are made with whole ingredients and do not contain bi-products which is REALLY improtant. Yorkie puppies tend to be picky eaters! Can you find a 100% natural apple sauce or maybe some organic yogurt/cottage cheese and mix his food up with that? All of those things are good for him anyways and might entice him to eat. you could even crush his food up and mix it in so he can't spit out the kibble :p |
I had the very same problems with Daizy when she was little.....well even now she acts very picky. I went to a Feed store..or a Store that sells Pet products and many of them have FREE samples of Premium foods! Just ask...if they have samples of their premium foods...take them home and try them out on your baby....see if he settles on one he likes. Taste of the Wild is also recommended for picky eaters... Both Eukenuba.and Caesars..foods are very low quality foods..2 stars or lower.. I feed my babies only 4-5 star foods! They do not cost much more than the lower quality foods! I also came to realize tha Daizy just doesnt eat as much as I expected her to eat. But shes healthy and happy! |
Your little puppy needs time to adjust to his new home. It is not uncommon for a Yorkie pup to not want to eat when there is a big change . I am glad you have the nutri cal handy. yorkies are known to be picky eaters too. Try a little cheese , yogurt, boild chicken no skin , and mix it in his food. When you can buy a pre. more nutritious food . The two foods he is now eating are of low quality. :aimeeyork |

I tried doing that as well, but he's really good at letting the food that he likes stay on his tongue. I just hope he doesn't starve himself and knows to eat when he's really hungry. |
My daughter will not like me responding to this thread:D:D:D My female is a little on the picky side but she will eat. My daughter has a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. He was very sick as a puppy and hardly ate at all. When she brought him to my house with the other dogs around I got him to eat but I was hand feeding him and also playing chase the kibble. So, now he only eats when he is hand fed and my daughter wants to shoot me. He is here visiting me for the next week while my daughter is in San Diego on vacation and is eating just great being hand fed breakfast and dinner. He even wants at the yorkies food and of course they want his. |
The dog food brands mentioned don't sound familiar to me. I have a Petsmart and a Petcetera in my city, but our Petsmart only carries half the stuff the US website carries. oh dear... |

OH and since you are Canadian- my FAVOURITE brand is GO but it is only available in Canada- it is made in Canada which i love- go to their site and see where you can get it- it's excellent food! |
your dog romeo is a pickey eater my dog toby is a dog that could eat all day long if I let him!!! And then my other dog trixie would try to steel his food when they are eating to geather. So my 2 dogs are not the pickest eaters in the world. But any way i am sorry i don't know how to help you!!!:( |
I am in Surrey, just outside of Vancouver. We have Petsmart, Petcetera and Bosley's. The same selection as Vancouver. I've been visiting Petsmart more often because they seem to have a wider selection. I have never been to Bosley's as it is a smaller store. Maybe I should give them a try, they might carry a higher quality selection? I've seen Blue at Petsmart. Maybe I should look for Go! Update: I just did a search and it seems that Bosley's carries most the the brands mentioned. =) |

Orijen it is!! Thanks Marcerella! |
When Bailey went through her picky stage - at the advice of my mother - we went raw. Mom (who is very serious about dog nutrition) designed a diet just for Bailey and her needs. It was the only thing Bailey would eat - and 2 years later, she's still lovin' it!! I know raw is not for everyone - and there are several different recipes - (ours consists of hamburger, venison and/or ground turkey, cooked rice, cottage cheese, bone meal, potassium, safflower oil, eggs and vegetables - along with daily vitamins and fish oil caplets) - I've heard nothing but good things about it. I serve Bailey only human grade food. Good luck!!! :) |
