Greenies
 
are greenies ok for dogs? My daughter told me she read a story that they are not.

Greenies were recalled probably about a few years ago, since then they have re designed ingrediants, and the shape of the greenie. I used to give my doxies them, but their stomachs are so sensitive that they would either throw them up, or poop them out, so i didn't give them anymore. Fiona she has an iron stomach and has had NO ISSUES with greenies what so ever. I give her the bigger ones, and of course I watch when she eats them, and will not leave her to herself in a crate with one. I think they are great. they do have greenie pieces, which i would never, ever give to my dogs, they are so tiny and i've heard horror stories with them- i used to be a vet tech- so vets had different views on greenies, but they are fine. With everything you give your dog, you need to just monitor!

awhile back there were problems, havent heard anythng recent about them,
but i still dont trust it... rather be safe than sorry.

Interesting....

Could be true, but I find it *very* tough to believe that there have been ZERO incidences w/ *any* chew product, let alone one that has a clear history of them. Hmmmm....still, interesting...

"New Greenies" still can cause intestinal obstructions.

The "New Greenies" are still causing obstruction problems in dogs as they do NOT dissolve. Here is a quote from one of the veterinary internal specialists on our listserve: "We had at least 3 "new" greenies as esophageal foreign bodies. A product is either 100% digestible or it isn't. Are the new greenies 100% percent digestible? A package I read said something like 99 point something, and a small piece the size of a grain of rice might not be digestible. For bigger dogs there wouldn't be much of risk, their intestines are bigger, but for a yorkie, I wouldn't risk it. Just because there have been no reports of blockage does not mean that they are safe, the reformulated product has only been around a couple of years, and the first product was around a long time, before we learned they were unsafe.

I can see if you gave greenies to your dog every day for life it could be bad...Fiona maybe gets 1 every 4 months or so!?

I went to the greenies web site and it says that the greenies LITE are highly soluble and digestible. It also says that dogs need to be supervised while eating them to make sure they are actaully chewing them, and not just gulping them down. Im sure they are fine as long at you do not feed them greenies allll the time and watch them to make sure they are chewing them and not just swallowing them cause i could see how that would pose a problem

Mine eat them in about 2 min....I personally feel like an entire greenie all at once is alot in a yorkie belly. So digestable or not I stay away.

I usually give Cassi the mini Greenies for teeth cleaning...every once a month. I allow her to chew on it for a few minutes and then usually toss the rest out b/c I don't want her to swallow it when it gets too small.

I don't feel safe or right about giving my girls Greenies. Instead they get supervised Bully stick time and I brush their teeth everyday.

I had a friend's Westie need a $2,000 surgery to remove an obstructed Greenie and would NEVER risk Snickers with them no matter what!! Not safe friends!! Why risk it when there is other chew treats available??
