Kibble Preference and Canidae Hi All, I know this has been done a zillion times but I would like to know what kibble you are feeding your furbabies? Bindi was on Canidae then I heard about the formula change. I had one bag of the "old" Canidae and it just ran out. I tried Innova EVO small bites, she doesnt like that. She wont eat it. I tried Innova she didnt like that. She wont touch it. I got her wellness small breed. Hates it. Wont touch it with a 10 foot pole. She looks at me all the time with her puppy dog eyes asking "Where is my Canidae?" So i ask you is the formula change for Canidae that bad? Is there a food similar to taste and size of Canidae? I think she liked the bigger kibble. What do you feed your furbutt? Thanks for all your help, V |
It is so confusing...isnt it? I was also on canadae, now i have them on Eagle Pak Holistic Select duck and oatmeal formula. They both love it. I hope it is a good food for them. I get so confused about the food thing...:) |
I don't feed kibble but if I did I would consider Innova, Natural Balance, Wellness, Orijen and (gasp;)) Science Diet Nature's Best Chicken. |

I feed my furbaby Sold Gold Just A Wee Bit. They're smaller kibbles and I've had good results with it. Good luck with your search! |

Anyone know WHAT was changed in the formula? Is it horrible ? Can i still feed her it? |

Not exactly sure what Canidae changed (I read about it awhile ago) but they say it makes the food better and everybody else says they cheapened it. It is now made at Diamond and some people refuse to feed anything that is made there. |
Old & new My two babies were on Canidae before the change and are still eating it after. They never missed a beat!:) |

Im currently feeding my boy EVO small bite red mead. His poop is small and really dosnt smell. His coat is beautiful. Im switching him over to raw this month when he finishes the last bag of kibble. Going to feed him Ziwi Peak and Honest Kitchen because its so much easier to digest. |

I'm not too familiar with Canidae so I'm no good helping you there. I know the Solid Gold I feed is (like someone else described) the size of a pea smushed pretty much. Hopefully someone else who's familiar with Canidae will be able to help you out. |
Hey V! How are you and Bindi!? I've been meaning to get on here and see what you've been up to but, I havent been on in so long. Anyway I finally found a brand that Meeko loves and doesn't make him scratch like crazy. He's been on Natural Balance sweet potato & duck for almost 2 months now and loves it. There's 2 different kibble sizes and I feed Meeko the bigger size because he was swallowing innova's small bites whole. The bigger kibble size is a big difference. I actually found a small container of Canidae and my bf's apartment and I couldnt believe how small it was. But, NB's kibble is a different size, its flat like little discs. I don't know how much smaller the other size is. Hope everythings well with you and Bindi! You should post pics new pics of her. take care! |
I was feeding Bella a rotation of the Natural Balance and just switched her to Orijen. I changed little pet stores where I am buying food and am now truly buying from a local boutique and the owner is more anal retentive about doing his research about dog food than I am so I feel more comfortable buying Bella's food there. I ending up talking to him for over an hour and have decided to feed Bella on a rotation of Orijen, Fromm (I think that's spelled correct) and Eagle Pack Holistic, and Taste of the Wild. I'm just not sure which of those other 3 I am going to rotate with as I'm still deciding. Although, the owner said he would help me decide when I come back in so it should be interesting. One thing I will say about the Orijen that I prefer over the NB is that Bella went right for the Orijen when I was switching her. She would pick out the NB and pitch it to the sides. Just my 2 cents. :):animal36 |
I still feed my dogs Canidae and we have not had any issues. I feed the All Life Stages. They love it... |

So....NB is smaller than Canidae? I had to buy her a bag of canidae as she would not touch anything else. :( thanks all! |
oops sorry i meant to write it's bigger than Canidae. But, I'm using the larger size. There is a bag of smaller kibble, it's called small bites I think. I just don't know how much smaller it is. Meek loves it tho. |
I feed chester solid gold wee bit and the kibble is pretty small, the canidaie if I recall is not much bigger. |

I am just like you in that I was on Canidae and switched to Innova EVO Small Bites when they changed their formula. Fortunately, Wookie :aimeeyork loves the Innova and I have had no problems with it. When I heard about the change in Canidae, I looked at the label on my current bag and compared it to the label on the dog food analysis site (which at the time still had the old label, not sure that they have updated it since). The things that I can remember seeing were the addition of fillers and grains. The one that stands out the most right now was millet. I remember thinking, "This is bird seed!". Wookie has never had any grain problems, but I just don't like the idea of him having so much of stuff he doesn't need. (Thats why I like Innova, it has been said it is the closest thing you can get to a raw diet in a kibble, no crap they don't need) I also didn't like what I heard about the company switching the formula so they can make a cheaper product to get into stores like Wal Mart. That made me uncomfortable with them. (Not to knock Wal Mart, just the idea of going to a lower quality product for that reason bugged me) You may just want to check the ingredients list and do some research on it and decide for yourself if it is something that you are comfortable on, and if your dog does well on. Every dog and owner are different. And by the way, you will probably always deal with this. Everytime I think I have this diet thing figured out, something comes along to change my mind. Whether it is a formula change, something changing with Wookie or just different trends in food. Its always something....Good luck!:animal-pa |

Gunner loves Canadae and his health has improved We just changed our Yorkie to Canadae along with a new Brittany puppy. Gunner loves it and is not continually regurgitating or vomiting as he was previously (unless he gets overly excited and starts barking right after eating). He had been on Royal Canine (Puppy food; Yorkshire and Special for sensitive stomaches). He has even been on ID for vomiting (never diarrhea). It appears grains may be the allergy problem. His coat is shinier, he doesn't scratch a lot as he did before and his sinus alergy has improved (although he still takes benedryl). I've read about the change in formula, but we haven't had a problem with our dogs on this brand. It was recommended by the Brittany breeder in Canada as she advises to avoid grains (wheat, gluten, etc). We had read the same recommendations in several books and articles. :animal-pa |

To the OP -- The change added some carbs -- if your dog is allergic, then it is a problem, otherwise, a little grain is actually a good thing. If you don't want any grain, they offer GRAIN-FREE formulas too. Here is the quote on what they added to the carbs (note: overall carb content was reduced -- just the portion of carbs was diversified with the following). " In addition to brown rice, we have diversified the complex carbohydrates in the formulas to include cracked pearl barley, rice bran, peas and millet for added flavor, nutritional value and easier digestion. " Here are the rest of the changes: Overview of enhancements to all formulas. • Lowered Carbohydrates while Increasing the Overall Carbohydrate Quality (see below) • Lowered Total Fiber and Increased the Overall Fiber Quality • Enhanced the Vitamin E Levels in all Formulas • Incorporated Beta Carotene • Incorporated Cranberries for Better Urinary Tract Heath • Increased Palatability • Increased Digestibility • Decreased Stool Volume Now with diversified carbohydrates. from their site: Diversified Carbohydrates in Improved CANIDAE Formulas I think the changes were good. Their site says the changes actually were more expensive and not cheaper. I like the lower carb and fiber content, the added beta carotene and cranberries, the increased taste and digestibility and of course the decreased stool size!! I did not like hearing that they were using the Diamond plant, but they do have their own facility there, that has not had a problem with contamination that some of the other parts of Diamond have experienced. They were one of the few brands to make it through the extensive recalls of a couple of years ago. I have stuck with them and my dogs thrive on it. Until I hear of a specific danger, I will continue with it. It took me too many trial and error experiments to find one they all like and do well on! |

Canadae Grain Free All Life Stages is working well We feed Gunner and Gracie (our new Brittany) Canadae Grain Free All Life Stages. We had tried everything to eliminate Gunner's continual regurgitation of his food and throwing up at night. He has had every possible test, xrays, etc - and always gets the same diagnosis - perfectly healthy yorkie with a sensitive stomach!!! We slowed down his eating, worked on getting him to stop playing after he eats (not good for the digestive system) and it was still a problem. This change over the last 3-4 weeks has been a miracle. We decided to try it for Gunner when we bought it for Gracie. We did the transition a day at a time and finished the switch after about a week or 10 days. It got better each day. Grain was the only thing we could think of that we had not eliminated. Although he still spits up clear fluid now and then if he starts barking or gets agitated (new puppy irritates him!), he is doing much, much better. Another "treat" is putting the canned food into Kong toys and freezing it. They love the treats! We use the No grain canned or the chicken and rice. They love it. Thanks for your responses! It's great to have folks to chat with and share experiences. |
I have been thinking of adding Canidae to our rotation. The lady at the pet food store I shop at said that some dogs had a reaction to the barley they added to the new formula, but most dogs do fine on it. She also said that since I'm already using a food that contains some barley that she doubts our dogs will have any problems with it. I emailed Canidae and they sent me a couple coupons. |
