Beamer's intranasal troubles
 

:confused: hello ppl I am new to this site, glad to have joined! I have a 8 month old male yorkie...my Boy Beamer! In the past month Beamer has started to do alot of sneezing & snorting with occasional clear discharge, he also at night is making snoring & wheezing sounds! While I am writing this he is at the vets....his DR wanted to keep him for the morning ..complete some tests ect. His lungs are clear, his appetite is good.......he's always been more of the cuddler compared to my other yorkie Abbey Girl. Has anyone else ever experianced this problem with their Yorkie! I have read that allergies in dogs are rare.....but I am so worried about my puppy........also my 16 year old daughter is distraught about this as well. These little dogs so quickly become family....lovable bits of mischief! :)

Hi and welcome to YT. :) I personally am not familiar with the symptoms that your little Beamer is showing. Hopefully your vet can diagnose Beamer and begin treating him and Beamer can begin to feel better soon.

YES!!!!!!!!! Gracie is doing the exact same thing! She sometimes sounds like she's gagging at night, too. My vet treated her two weeks ago with Amoxicillin because she had started this, and we thought it was congestion, and a respiratory infection. But she hasn't gotten any better!

She goes to the vet again today and I'll let you know what I find out!

Thanks..........I'll do the same as he is still there being tested by vet and spoiled by the vet's staff...as I am waiting by the phone for his call!

TRACHEOBRONCHITIS (INFECTIOUS)
KENNEL COUGH

A mild, self-limiting disease, involving the trachea and bronchi of dogs of any age. It spreads rapidly among animals that are closely confined as in hospitals or in kennels. Environmental factors such as cold, drafts and high humidity apparently increase susceptibility to the disease.
The incubation period is 5 to 10 days. The outstanding sign is a harsh, dry cough, which is aggravated by activity or excitement. The coughing occurs followed by retching or gagging in attempts to clear small amounts of mucous from the throat. Reverse sneezing is noted in some cases. Gentle pressure over the larynx or trachea will induce a cough. Body temperature is normal in the early stages but may be elevated as secondary bacterial invasion takes place. The most severe signs are noted during the first five days, but continue in some degree for 10 to 20 days.
Treatment - Keep warm (not hot) and quiet. An expectorant like Benadryl Children's Antihista-mine/Nasal Decongentant (dosage 1 to 1 1/2 ml-two times a day) and though antibiotics have no effect on the primary disease and it will have to run its' course, they may be used to good effect in controlling secondary bacterial infection, which could lead to pneumonia if unchecked. Amoxicillin is my Veterinarian's choice as a primary antibiotic. 50 mg two times day for ten days.
Whether or not to vaccinate your dogs against Bordatella (another respiratory disease) probably depends on your exposure. If they are to be kennelled or shown at indoor shows during the cold winter months, then it is probably a very good idea to have your veterinarian give this vaccination which is very effective. It may give your dog a mild case of the disease, but can be beneficial if the exposure is a threat.

I got the call from the vet and picked up my boy "Beamer"....all xrays clear.......no kennel cough or bacterial infections..........the Vet is now thinking this could be an allergy for Beamer.....so we are trying him on a extremely low low dose of prednisone to see if this will relieve some of his intranasal inflammation! We are trying this for only 4 days than he will be reevaluated. I also.......DUH.....went & changed my furnace filter.....kinda neglected this as the old one was sooo dirty! The things we should do but forget to do of course the dust allergens will bother the tiniest ones first! I hope we are on the right path! He is happy to be at home, perky & teasing Abbey! I'm anxious to see if the prednisone works. Our vet says that Gracie has kennel cough and put her on a new antibiotic plus gave her some cough medicine to help her sleep at night. However it didn't do a thing for her! She was still up hacking and stuff.

I'll post after Beamers evaluation at the end of the week! I gave him his 1st dose of prednidone last night.....took it like a trooper........but than he'll eat just about anything! So he gets it for 4 days (twice a day) than 2 days to wean off with 1/2 doses! So far he was snorting & snoring last night....(my 16 year old daughter says he's trying to sound like Daddy!!)...lost of clear nasal mucus!

Hi Again..........just a quick update....Beamer has been on prednisone since Monday night........we have noticed today a definate improvement.......No snorting & only a couple of sneezes today, also his abundant clear nasal discharge has cleared! He is sleeping more peacefully .....no more snoring like Dad (the human dad that is)!! I'm not sure if he'll stay on this or what as we ween him off prednisone on weekend! Guess we'll see...and check with the vet on Monday! anyone else have yorkies with allergies??
