How much should a 9 week old eat?
 
Hey everyone! I just picked up my little girl today! She is 9 weeks old and such a joy! She is already paper trained, she hasn't had any accidents..yet!! :D

Anyway, I am just curious on how much a 9 week old should be eating. It seems like she has hardly eaten anything, but she is quite small so I guess it might be a lot to her! I have chosen to free feed, but she hasn't eaten all the food in her dish yet. Could she just be nervous? Is she eating enough? She has probably had 1/4 cup of food since 4:00PM. Thanks for all your help!

Since she is a puppy, and a premature one at that.. you need to make sure she is eating pretty frequently. I'm not sure I could give you an actual amount but you need to make sure she is eating 4-5 times a day. Every couple of hours, take her to it or maybe hand feed it to her. Depending on how small she is, you might need to keep some Nutrical on hand in case she goes into hypoglycemic shock. She is VERY young; too young to be away from her mom so you definitely need to watch her carefully. Good luck!

since you just got her today she may just be adjusting to her move and new enviornment. having said that though it is very important that she eats, get nutrical and put some on her food, I did this each morning to help Samson eat. I still free feed because he is only 8 month old and is 4 lbs. We are getting another one this weekend and I plan to give Harley nutrical with his food too.

Hello I also have a 9 week old baby.I got her as a present from my wonderful husband on Christmas day.The breeder was feeding her eukenuba puppy food for small breed.She doesn't want to eat it now so I tried giving her the eukenuba puppy chunks mixed with her dry food,she seemed to like it for a day but now she doesn't touch it either.Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get her to eat her food?Do I need to switch her food but will that upset her tummy.Sometimes if I put food on the fllor she will grab it and run and will go in a little corner or what I will do sometimes and put her dry food in her mouth almost like hand feeding her.Help!

I think 1/4 cup since 4:00 PM sounds like a lot for a puppy that age. You said she is small. How small is she?

That's how much my girl ate at that age. I think that's pretty good considering she just arrived at her new home. Congratulations :)

have you tried to put the nutrical on the food, I use to get a spoonful and stir it in Sam's food each morning and that helped. I got him at 7 weeks and he only weighed 1.8 lbs so I was really worried when he didn't eat. this helped alot and he loved the nutrical.

Thanks for the suggestion,I tried to look for it at the petstore today but they didn't have any.I bought a bag of wellness puppy food and I am going to try and see if she might like it...I hope!If not the search continues:thumbup:.

I have a 14-week old puppy who refuses to eat any hard kibble, even though that is supposedly what she was eating before I got her (at 11 weeks old). She will only eat The Honest Kitchen (Embark formula) and Newman's Own wet dog food, and she waits for me to mix cottage cheese and chicken or hamburg (cooked) in before she eats. Congrats on your new puppy and good luck!

One word of advice, make sure she is eating 4-5 (or 6!) times a day. I don't know what size she is, but Meg is 1.75 lbs now and eats probably 1-3 tablespoon fulls of wet food 5 times/day. That's just a guess on my part since I haven't been very good about measuring out her food.

Just make sure that she is eating. Meg ended up being hypoglycemic and hospitalized for two nights with an IV glucose drip just a day after I brought her home because she wouldn't eat the kibble I put out for her. (Stupid me should have just started feeding her chicken/rice, etc, but I was afraid to upset her tummy.)
