Please I Need Some Good Advice!! Hi, I have a 10 week old yorkie, Charlie. When I got Charlie he was on wet puppy food. So I bought the same food and continued eating his puppy food until he noticed that my older dog was eating dry adult food and some table food. He began eating Ally's food and now I can't get him to eat puppy food. He will go with out eating if I dont give him mainly table food. Please, anyone, give me some advice. Is he at danger for eating table food? I rather him eat what is good for him. Thanks twroscoe |
yes he is at danger from eating table food- it is probably too fatty and has too much sodium and is not at all balance- which as a YOUNG puppy is crucial. HE WILL EAT if he is hungry- he is at a VERY important stage in his development and NEEDS NEEDS puppy food- it is essential to his growth and well being. Try getting a new type of food to entice him to eat it. and stick to your guns! |
Yes he is in danger if he eats more than about 10% people food a day (and even that 10% has to be healthy and appropriate for dogs). It is also not healthy for him to eat adult dog food. Because of hypoglycemic risk, he may need to be forced to eat. |
But how do I force him to eat? Also he drinks water all the time, is this a concern? Should I let him drink and then take the water away? Should I separate my big dog and my yorkie when its time to eat? |
Yes, I would seperate them to eat. Your big dog really shouldn't be eating table food either. Since he eats adult dog food, I would seperate them and feel the baby a good quality dry puppy food. |
Can you give me some suggestions on what kind of dry puppy food? My big dog mainly eats dry adult dog food. |

Water should be available all day every day. You can put the canned in his mouth and make him eat or find something that he likes. If you list the foods available to you in your area, we can help you pick one. :) |
The only foods I really know about is the ones you can buy at a regular store, Walmart, grocery store. Is there a kind at these locations that will be ok to feed him? |
I just read a thread about a yorkie that almost died from eating a combination of table food and a few other things. I have a list on my refrigerator on what foods my yorkies can and can not eat. I think I found the list on here. I've never fed my babies table food, but have given previous dogs of a different breed or mixed breed a bite every now and then. But when I researched the Yorkshire Terriers a long time ago, I found how dangerous it could be. Quote Ellie May<Water should be available all day every day. I just wanted to let you know that it's noticed and you are appreciated.:thumbup::thumbup: |
I have gave my yorkie, boiled chicken and turkey. Thats what I mean by table food. But today I started him on puppy dry food and he actually ate it. I was surprised but he did. |

It is my pleasure to help. Taking care of an animal can be so frustrating at times. |
