My Roxy has been suffering with this hair loss thing for about a year now, I've had her shaved completely and everything grew back except her back legs- took her to the vet- no thyroid problems or anything- the vet recommended a venison and potato or duck and potato diet. Roxy wouldn't touch either- I home cook for her. Now I'm about to start homecooking duck I suppose YUCK! Any more luck with your baby? What did you feed when the hair was growing back? |
Don't know of this is pertinent, but last year I went through this with Baron - lots of hair loss, no skin irritation, no itching. It ended up that he had a fungal infection (ringworm). After having him on shampoo mixed with chlorhexadine, he got over it and the hair grew back beautifully. I read somewhere on here that you can shine a blacklight on the hair and broken hair caused by fungus will glow green. |
balding back legs Come to think of it, the vet said Roxy had a bacterial infection- gave us cefoodoxine and predinosone- the itching and scratching stopped while she was on the meds about 3weeks- but shortly thereafter- the scratching resumed- that was in October- Now I'm finding little spritzes of hair everywhere and she is scratching her self silly. I had used moducare sterols and slacked up for the scratching before. I have resumed the moducaare but it takes a couple of months to really make a dif. Think I'll be taking her back to the vet asap- don't like the meds- but can't bear to watch her scratch for 2 months either. At first I though it was because she had been boarded for seven days and she was nervous or something but it's been 2 weeks now and the scratching seems to be increasing. Even with the meds- thehair never grew back though |
If hairloss is this marked, I'd recommend a vet visit - and a skin scraping (for bacteria) and a culture (for fungus); also rule out mites/mange. At this young age, can't imagine thyroid involvment, but it should at least be discussed. Please keep us posted :)! |
Same... I'm having the same problem with my baby Sophie. She has a head and front half full of hair but her hind end and back legs look bare. I mean theres hair there but its really thin. I've taken her to the vet and he says he cant find anything wrong with her, they've done test after test but nothing. :confused: I mean she dosen't have fleas and there haven't been any problems with her skin or her acting differently. I'm about at my whits end with it. Not sure whats going on, I'm not getting answers from the vet and I'm just worried there might be something wrong. Then again I have a tendency to worry over little things but this is my baby I'm talking about. |
Hair growing back now Greetings, Rox actually is growing her hair back now and not itching very much. I determined that she is definetly having allergic reactions to chicken. I have been giving her Ark Naturals Royal Coat religiously according to the bottle directions 1/4 t and then 1/8 t since my last post. I also give her Omega treats- salmon and potato and duck and potato every day. Also I have rinsed her in the half and half organic apple cider vinegar and water mixture every other week after her bath. I think the omega 3 oil is really what is doing it. I stopped the moducare after a friend told me to just be consistent with the Ark Natural Royal Coat and I would see results. I will continue with the Ark Natural Royal Coat because I have seen much faster results than anything else. |
My baby had the same problem and the vet gave her a roun of antibiotics for 2 weeks and I also gave her a fish oil tablet daily. I also changed her diet to Natural balance sweet potato & venison. I bathe her with hypoallergenic shampoo. Another thing that I found was Dermagic lotion that I would rub on her legs every evening. I started all of this at the end of May and right bow her hair on her hind kegs are about even with the front. It was very stressful not knowing what the problem was. We even dis a thyroid test and that was normal. Hope this helps!! |

Cooper is 1 1/2 years old. He has a very thin patch of hair on his back. The breeder was very vague about the reason for this. The vet is no help except to put him though some skin tests. I do not feel that I want to tramatize him since he is a healthy guy otherwise. It does bother me though that the breeder might be hiding something. Haircuts, fish oil supplements nothing seems to make it grow. Does anyone think it is a breeder issue? |

I have a friend who has a very tiny yorkie. She was also very thin, i mean anorexia thin. This little one had tapeworm, which accounted for the thinness. SHe also had extremely thin hair. I thought it had to do with diet and the weight loss from the tapeworms. Her hair was thin all over, not just on her legs. So my guess would be some kind of nutrient imbalance, or the possibility of mange which Anne reccomended these yorkies' ought to have a skin scraping to rule out any type of mange or fungus. Mange is easily detected by a simple skin scraping, and looking under a microscope. If any of your yorkie's have other symtoms then hair loss then other things could be a possibilty. Only a vet can determine what is causing the hair loss. Perhaps a blood test may be needed too. |
