Dandruff Anybody's baby have dandruff problem...? Everytime I comb him, snow falls.. I have switched his food to Innova instead of Pro Plan the breeder gave him, it has gotten a little better, but still alot of dandruff. I wash him once a week - 10 days, but the 2nd day after bath, he gets dandruff...HELP |
I got my male when he was about three months old and he had dandruff, too. I took him to our vet and he said it was common and he sold me an "emollient" shampoo. I also bathe my puppy (8 months old now) once a week and it was gone in two baths. I still use it and the dandruff has never reappeared. I'm sure your vet carries a similiar emollient shampoo, so if I were you, I'd call! |
sounds like dry skin problems. Have you tried bathing your baby in oatmeal shampoo? it's for sensitive skin. also, what are you using now for shampoo? could be an allergy. also, how often do you bathe? |
Gucci had dry flaky skin. I switch her food to Natural Balance and also starting using Missing Link. Also I used Oatmeal Shampoo once a week. I dont know which or the combination of all the changes make her dry and flaky skin dissapeared. |
thanks for all the replies! I use Lambert Kay's Oatmeal & baking soda Shampoo, and also Lambert Kay's conditioner. I bathe him once every 7-10days. |
Have the vet do a little scrapping to check for demodex mites..very common in young puppies. If you get a positive result.. do NOT do the chemical dips..here is a natural remedy.Found on the net. Demodicosis (red mange) is a skin disease caused by a small mite not visible to the naked eye. This mite lives down in the root of the hair. All normal dogs have a small population of mites, but only certain animals will get a disease from mite overgrowth. In some cases, the tendency to develop demodectic mange runs in families. Homeopathic Treatment of Mange The basic problem is poor immune system and the diet, which needs to be totally preservative free. Use garlic raw in the food up to 2 cloves. Here's a herbal treatment - Demodex can be hard to rid but if the dog is in general good health including natural raw diet, plenty of exercise and daily grooming this is worth a try. Save all used lemon halves and place in a gallon container, at least 24 halves to the gallon. Place the jar or container in the hot sunlight or pour hot water over the lemon. let the lemon remain in the water until pieces begin to turn mouldy, then remove and replace with fresh ones, squeezing hard the old ones into the water. Do not throw away any of the old lemon water which then remains. Rub the lemon potion into all parts of the dog's body to expel the skin vermin. When pomegranates are available, the peel can be added to this lemon lotion with great advantage. Use the skins from three pomegranates to every nine lemons. (keep jar covered with a paper top -not greased paper) For the Demodectic Mange I would suggest using a lemon tonic that you can make at home. 1 lemon whole lemon sliced thinly 1 pint water Bring water to near boil add lemons, let steep overnight. Sponge on once a day. I understand all puppies have demodex, but it only becomes a problem if they have been under stress or poor immune system, then the demodex "takes off". |
Flaky skin... Chewie had flaky skin earlier this summer - we were using oatmeal shampoo, and testing theories of frequent as well as infrequent bathing... Thankfully, he went for a vet visit, and the vet prescribed HUMILAC spray. I'm sure that you could buy humilac online from a vet supply site or something like it. Our bottle was about $14.00 and has made a FANTASTIC difference (NO MORE FLAKES!). Anyhow, the Humilac is used when Chewie takes a bath - we spray him down when his hair is damp. You can also use it as a rinse... We follow up with a few spritzes every day or so. I think I should also mention that Chewie was prescribed Omega-3 oil during that same vet visit. We haven't had much luck with the Omega-3 though... It has made his stool very runny, and we are happy to report that his dry skin has cleared up with the use of Humilac on its own. Sure hope that the flakes end for you soon! -Christina and Chewie |
