Scratching ears and yelping? My girl yorkie scratches her ears and kind of yelps and groans sometimes. She actually does it every single time she scratches her ears. Is something wrong? ] I clean them out once a week and they are always dirty, but I think that is because she has too much hair in there and she is going to the groomers to get them cleaned up, but wondering if I should be concerned. |

you may be able to ask your vet for a culture if he doesn't suggest one. it can be so many things like fungus, mites, allergies, food allergies.... just to name a few and the vet is the best person to check it out for you . Good luck .... |
It sounds like something is bothering her. I'm glad you are taking her to the vet. |
I decided to clean out her ears and just see if what I was seeing was just dirt or whatever. There was a minimum amount since I cleaned them last week and it is only one ear that looks red and irritated so is it still an allergy of some sort? I started thinking about it and that is the ear that she scratches and groans. The other one is fine and doesn't look irritated at all. Nothing has changed as far as feeding or bathing.. I did run out of CC and bathed with groommax white shampoo that I had for a rescue maltese, but I only did that twice. I am just a little worried now since I want to take her tonight just so I won't obsess about it too much. |

Forgot to add that I did get something to clean out both of their ears and it Ortirinse ear cleansing/drying solution. I do that once a week when I bath them and I clean it out with q-tip since her ears are really small and then wipe the larger area with a cotton ball with a little solution on it. |

Most likely it's an ear mite or fungal infection in her ears and it will need to be treated with medication ... best to have the Vet take a look see |
She does need to see the vet but did they explain how to safety use qtips? |
I use the Cleansing solution also after I give Daisy a bath b/c she is prone to ear infections. However, I have never used the Qtips. My vet told me to use a kleenex and just wipe it out after I put the cleansing solution in. It sounds like your baby may have an ear infection. I would definitely be seeing the vet b/c they may prescribe some antibiotics. |

I don't mind not using the q-tips since kleenex ususally works fine with Hooks. I was thinking maybe she has had the infection all along and maybe that is the cause of the excessive dirty ears. Just kind of annoyed because I took her to the vet (I tried out a new one at the office) and she pretty told me she was healthy but didn't do anything that any of the other vets did when I brought in puppies.... I just thought it was me being too sensitive. |

Update !!! I took Hooks and Simone to the vet and it was ear mites:confused: She had given him some so I got him treated too. |
Thanks for the update! yea, I would treat them both at the same time. :D |
I was searching different threads and found this one which is the exact same experience my little one is going through. My little guy is yelping while he scratches his ear. I have looked into his ear and it is fairly clean, there is no redness. He only scratches a handful of times a day then shakes his head. Just went to the vet to get him his Parvo shot and he checked his ear as I told him about the scratching, but he advised that there was nothing that he could see (or smell). He did advise to pull his ear hair out though. I have switched up his food 2 times, but he still scratches. Is there anything else I could be missing? After my explanation above my real questions is in regards to removing his ear hair. I was at the local store today and something caught my eye. It was a nose hair remover! I was wondering if this would be safe to use on my little guy to remove the hair from aggravating his inner ear. Would it be safe to use? Has anyone ever tried this before? I am asking since when I try to remove my little guys ear hair he basically screams in pain and tries to get out of my grip with all his might and I don't want to restrain him too hard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!:animal36 |

How old is your little guy? When I first time I took Simone to the vet the day I bought her the vet said the same thing to me. Her ears were really small and they just clipped a little of the ear hair with scissors and said that was probably what she needed. She grew a few weeks and that is when I was able to smell her nasty ears and see the irritation. I just used scissors very carefully to cute the access hair....I am a slightly weary of the nose hair trimmer because I imagine that it would pluck it out but again I don't know anything about nose hair trimmers;) My baby had the infection and ear mites for about 7 weeks, that is how long it took her little ears to grow out. She was 8 weeks when I got her. Hope that helps. As someone told me on her the yelping is definitely not normal and all of it stopped with Simone immediately after she got treatment so I don't think it is the hair either since she still has hairy ears:D |
