Peanut butter recall.. Warning about salmonella. I know a lot of members here use peanut butter for administrating medication and for treats. Please be careful as the FDA has issued a hugh recall of not only peanut butter but other product containing peanuts such as cookies, crackers etc. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum but wanted to be sure as many people see it as possible. |
I heard that on the news tonight. So far Skippy and Jiff are safe I think. |
I heard about this on the news a day or two ago. Do they know what kind of peanut butter or what brands are being recalled? That part I didn't catch. |

I would go to the FDA's website because the latest I heard was all peanut butter and anything that has peanuts in it. My understanding is that it is a supplier that supplies peanuts to many different companies. |

"WASHINGTON -- Federal health authorities are urging consumers to avoid eating foods that contain peanut butter until they can learn more about a deadly salmonella outbreak. But the FDA said there's no indication of problems with peanut butter sold in jars at supermarkets." I copied that quote from the opening part of the story. |
I heard about it too, and I use to put in Kong balls, but not anymore. |
So far all Ive heard that was affected was peanut butter that goes to institutions, keebler amos peanut butter cookies and peanut butter crackers and little debbie peanut butter crackers |
The nice thing is that most dogs do not get seriously ill from salmonella, if they get sick at all from it. They do not get as sick with it as humans might :) |

The FDA website says: "But the FDA said there's no indication of problems with peanut butter sold in jars at supermarkets. Investigators are focusing on peanut paste and peanut butter produced at a Georgia plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America. Its products are distributed to institutions and food companies but are not sold directly to consumers." I'm not going to worry too much. I don't eat much processed food anymore. |
Thank you for the head's up! |

What I would like to know is why in the world is Lowes Foods advertising peanut butter on the front page of this weeks ad. True it may not be the one in the recall, but I am not buying any peanut butter anything until things get cleared up. |
It's not actual peanut butter, it's peanut paste that is mixed in food here is a link of the stuff recalled/effected Search for Peanut Butter Product Recalls |
Well tonight said treats for dogs that had peanut butter. So I wouldn't do any of that and if you are having troubles and kept the treats. I think I would have it tested. Its not worth the problems. But sounds like they aren't sure yet. |
To be honest, I don't know much about salmonella and how it affects dogs (or humans for that matter) but after hearing some news today from a client, it still is possible for dogs to get salmonella poisoning just as bad as humans. One of our clients that boards their dog and cat frequently in the summer, called today and spoke with our assistant manager. She told her that her dog Chewy (yorkie mix) had gotten really really ill and was in the hospital for almost 3 days for some kind of "virus." He actually almost died as a result from it. The vet is now leaning towards possible salmonella poisoning. It was so heartbreaking hearing that, but at the same time, it was very sweet of her to call us and let us know what Chewy has been through this past week. My heart goes out to that little guy. Please be cautious of all peanut butter products and keep your eyes (and ears) open in case more recalls come through. |

I know peanut butter is not an issue but anything that is made with commercial peanut butter or peanut paste could be. I just don't want to take any chances. |
I am just going to pitch any treats that have peanuts in it to be on the safe side. I would hate for Biggie to get really ill. |
