Teething and not eating JoJo is 4 1/2 months old now and he's been teething. So far his 4 lower teeth have fallen out. He doesn't seem to have a problem with his chew toys, however, he isn't eating and I'm worried sick. I normally feed him Blue Buffalo dry food for puppies. At first I was softening it by putting some water in it, but he won't touch it. Then I bought some Blue canned food and mixed in a bit with his kibble, and he still won't eat. He did however eat the wet food off a spoon while I held him to try to get him to eat. But other than that, no matter what I put in his food bowl he won't eat it. He's still full of energy and even right now playing with his toys like a tazmanian devil! But I'm so worried about him and his nutrition. Is this normal during the teething phase? And if so, what can I do to ensure that he gets nourished and also to get him to eat his kibble again? I don't want him to get spoiled with the wet food. |
Hmmmm...but everything else is normal - like his poos? If he is still "chewing" at toys, but has truly lost his appetite - then I'm not sure it's due to his teeth. While teething can affect the entire GI tract and can cause pain (and pain can cause nauseousness), I'm still not sure this is causing his appetite loss - bc if his teeth were really hurting him, I don't think he'd chew his toys as often. But it *might* be contributing. If his appetite continues to be depressed and he seems off in any way, I'd probably have him looked at. :) |
Yes his pooh is normal. He was just at the vet a couple weeks ago and got a clean bill of health, but I guess anything can happen over a course of a couple weeks. His energy level is still just as high as when he was eating normally, so he doesn't appear sick, but who knows what could be going on in that little body of his. Maybe I should call my vet? I'm just worried because money is a little tight now after Christmas and I've been paying over $80 every 3 weeks for his vet visits so far and also plan on neutering him next month. |
What about trying just the wet food in the bowl, no kibble - to test his appetite? And/or, perhaps grab an entirely different brand of good canned food and test his appetite with that. |
Try taking his kibble, putting it in a Ziplock and pounding it to crumbs. I did this for my pup a few weeks back when he could not chew his food (would take him 10 min to chew 1 piece of kibble) and he ate it right up. Also if he is still reluctant, try crumbing in one of his favorite biscuits or treats. This helped as well. I also did not want to give him wet b/c then he would get used to it and possibly not go back to his dry. Good luck:) -Vivian:animal-pa |

My dog did this to me... drove me crazy! One day she wouldn't eat no matter what I did(wet food, water on her food, not even treats!), the next she ate almost normally. I think the pain is what might be causing this. Like another poster said crumble up the food and add a little water, this helped my pup eat better, in fact she would gobble it down. Good luck! If you notice any dramatic changes as he's not full of energy or not drinking water or going to the bathroom, I'd take him to the vet. |
Teething won't eat I had this problem with my Pom years ago to the point that he was not only not eating but crying. We rushed him to the vet and he said his jaw was sore from the chew toy and to try and take the chew toy away, soften food with hot water let cool. It worked. I have to say with all my dogs if there is something wrong and they won't eat, I cave in and give them chicken. They eat it every time. Yogurt is good too. Ground chicken with a bit of plain boiled rice if they have the runs. Mya and the pups had boiled ground chicken last night for dinner, just because they were being fussy and I was still concerned that Pattycakes is 1 lb 12oz. They woke up early this am full of energy. |

Yay I'm so happy that worked...HOORAY:D Snickers went to the vet yesterday and he has a UTI and the antibiotics make him super thirsty and give him no appretite...he would not touch his food. So guess what, had to get some can...of course he gobbled it...now I'm scared!!:eek: Let's pray he goes back to dry....the situations never end!!! Smiles- Vivian:animal-pa |

Awww! Nothing better than helping your neighbor!!! How is your pup handleing this cold?? Snickers rebelled last week when it was negative 30, who wouldn't? We took him to the garage to potty on newspaper and pee pads...not fun and gross! I took him back outside today and he was so happy, and so was I!!!! He and I hate him being dirty! ha! Teething Thanks for all your suggestions...last night I crumbled the kibble and Bella starting eating right away. I also placed a washcloth in the freezer and this morning she loved that too! |
