Road salt and Yorkies Is the road salt dangerous on their paws??? I wipe it off with a baby wipe. Does it cause health problems if they lick it??? |
When Harry boy goes for a walk, I get a little plastic bowl with warm water and a hand towel, and dip his paw in the water to make sure we get good in between the toes and then I dry it with the towel. Salt is very bad for the paws and you don't want him licking between his toes if he gets it in there. better safe than sorry.. hugs, cArmen in nj |
I'm not sure how dangerous it is but it would not be healthy because they'd be getting excess salt. When Ellie walks in it, she ends up picking up one of her paws. I guess it burns her or something, so we carry her around it. |
Salt (road or table) is not good for pets. |
yes, the road salt is dangerous for them. It's calcium chloride and is poisonous. It also dries out their paws. Wetting their feet just activates the salt and makes it do it's job....melt snow and ice. We've been wearing light fleece boots to protect them from the salt but if I do wash their feet, I actually use soap and water. Then I blow them dry to make sure all the salt is off. So glad we're moving away from all this! lol |
we try to avoid the salt ..as i understand some of them may contain an antifreeze type of substance and cause major illness or death if ingested, by licking the paws...a friend had a great dane die of this,as she did not know...wash it off and as yorkies are low on the ground they can also get it on the tummy etc ..better to use the old sand ! |
I'm sure it wouldn't be good for them. I'd wash and dry their paws really well everytime they came in. |

i can't wait until spring. they dump tons of salt on the streets here.:( |
Spring can not come soon enough. Poor Cassi has been stuck in the house b/c she hates going out in the cold. Good thing she goes on her pee-pad, therefore, I have one less thing to worry about. But I do have to worry about the salt that me and DH trek into the house. I'm always sweeping and vacuuming the floor to make sure that I get all the salt off the floor. |
