Rabies shot i am new here but I have a question. My baby Doodles got her rabies shot and she had a reaction to it. They have her on predisaone and she is still not herself. She is just laying around won't play . I have taken her back to the vet twice is this common ?:( |
My yorkie had a very very bad reaction to it. The vets ignored it until it she needed to be hospitalized. My breeder said she doesn't vaccinate her yorkies because they don't need it, and she will defend her stance. I will not vaccinate jenny again. Jake is ok with it. My breeder said a lot of vets give them too high of a dosage, and a lot of small dogs have allergic reactions to rabies vac. If your dog is going to be playing interacting with other dogs, or roaming outside, where she/he can be bitten by a stray animal, then you need to vaccinate. |

Thank you so much for the information. She did get the three year vaccine this time but I am not sure that I will ever put her through this again . The predisone is making her sick as well . So I think the cure is just as bad as the diease or vaccine in this case. Thank You again |

the next time u get your baby vaccinated ask them to give her some benedryl and prednisone, that will help with any reactions. hope she gets better soon! :animal-pa |
I lost my yorkie at 9 months old to a rabies shot. Suri is due for her shot but our vet said we can hold and possibly not have to get it at all. She said we can waive it if we need to. |
I am sorry to hear about your baby having a bad reaction. Biggie had a bad reaction so some of his vaccines whe he was a puppy. He had terrible diarrhea for a couple weeks and lost weight...it was terrible. I know what you mean when you say your little on isn't herself. Biggie gets all his shots now one at a time with several days of separation between them. It has worked well...he did not get sick when vaccinated last year. |
Lady had a bad reaction to her last rabies shot and was sick for almost a week afterwards even though she was on steriods. :( |
With a really bad reaction to a Rabies vaccine, I'd not vaccinate my dog against it again. The risk of exposure to Rabies in the United States is VERY, VERY low-- most cases these days are found in bats, which it would be very hard for a Yorkie to come into contact with. If your pet did for some reason come into contact with a rabid animal, most states offer an option of having the potentially exposed animal quarantined rather than euthanized, which would be expensive, but so very unlikely to happen that I'd think the benefit of avoiding a KNOWN serious reaction would outweigh the risk. Try asking your vet if you can have her write a waiver for the purpose of licensing. |
That is the probelm ... if the vet refuses to do a waiver then the Rabis shot has to be given legally. With the other shots, after all the rounds are given, a titier test ought to be given. Suzi just sept the rest of the day after the Rabies was given. However , I had a cat that became very ill after her shots! Reactions are common in any animal given these potent vaccines. |
I wouldn't go back to a vet that refused to waive a Rabies vaccination after a serious reaction had occurred. It is within the law for a vet to determine that an animal is not fit to have the vaccine. Some of the other vaccines are a bit different because the diseases that they protect against are more common, but with something as rare as Rabies, I'd hope that almost every vet would be willing to discontinue the vaccine if something more than just mild soreness and sleepiness had happened the last time the animal was vaccinated. And if they aren't-- well, there are other vets out there. |
I believe it is common. Did she have it close to other shots. |
Doodles is doing better. She is still not quite herself but she is getting there. Thank You for your help. The vet said that since it was a three year shot that it wouldn't be a problem for a while. She never had such a bad reaction to a shot before. But I think that the treatment for the reaction was just as bad. I am just happy that she is better. Thanks again to every one. |
