Help my puppy is itching alot
 

okay so ive had my dog already for 3 weeks and he has always lightly scratched and licked but i just though it was normal i mean after all he is a dog ... but ever since saturday when i got him groomed for the first time he has started scratching behind his ears constantly yesterday i held him down and checked the back of his ears for fleas but nothing but i did come accross three little round scabs i put some cortisone and it calmed him down for a while untill this morning that my mom saw his little ear all red and called me and put some more cortisone im very worried i dunno what it is if it can be an allergy or an ant bite or what can anyone help me i dont think it be food allergies cause wouldnt it be all over his body if it were food i feed him natural choice [COLOR=green! important][COLOR=green! important]puppy[/COLOR][/COLOR] oatmeal formula i know its not the best but the lady i got him from use to feed him kibble and bits yuk horrible then i switched him to this one not knowing that it wasnt all that good and now i want to switch him to wellness but im afraid to hurt him or something because hes so little only 4 months any suggestions please help

Gus was scratching a lot below his ear. I was felt around and found a lump. I gave him a bath & inspected the area. It looked like a cluster of scabs. Took him to the vet, & the vet wasn't sure what it was. The vet prescribred Amoxi for a bacterial infection, & Prednisone to stop the itching/scratching. He'll finish his 10 days on meds tomorrow, & it's almost cleared up. He's been drinking huge amounts of water & peeing a lot to the medicine.

If he is a puppy, I'd get him in asap - esp. w/ those scabs. Puppies can easily have mange, mites and other things. Ask for a skin scraping to determine what it is - itching to the point of scabs isn't normal and it should be checked by a vet. Keep us posted! :)

I'd bring him to the vet. Piper started that scratching thing, and before we knew it he was losing hair, and gaining a lot of scabs. I checked him for fleas, but I couldn't find them. Went to the vet, and he found them right away, gave him a shot, and put him on I believe it's cortisol. I can't find it right this minutes, but I'm sure someone will know the proper name. It's a pill you give for fleas instead of the liquid stuff. He was showing great signs of improvement within 3 days, and now he's just fine.

I know this is an old thread but it comes up on Google when you search for itching Yorkie puppy, so I figured I would share my experience in the hopes of helping anyone else out there looking for help.

My puppy Woodstock is 13 weeks old and just came home with me from the breeder 3 days ago. On his second day here, yesterday, he started scratching like crazy, behind his ears and on his sides mostly, and biting his feet. By last night he was whimpering and rubbing on the carpet and really, really uncomfortable, and it was killing me. I felt extremely helpless and needed to do something, so I started googling like a mad man. I found this and many other threads suggesting a number of sometimes contradictory plans of action, but nothing worked.

I tried giving him a sink bath with newborn baby shampoo in lukewarm water - which didn't go very well - and rinsed thoroughly, but to no avail. The scratching got worse as soon as he was dry.

So first thing this morning I ran to Petsmart and, on a lark, got something called Vet's Remedy Hot Spot Spray. It was kind of pricey, and as a spray I had to be very careful not to get it in his eyes, but to my surprise it started to work almost immediately. After whimpering and scratching for the past 16 hours, the little guy is currently lying on his back, paws in the air, sleeping away with a huge smile on his face. He hasn't scratched once since I first applied the spray almost two hours ago.

Obviously, sprays like this only treat symptoms and I will have to find a more permanent solution to the itching at the vet this week, but I wanted to share this with anyone out there who might be in the same situation I was last night.

After reading the horror stories of itchy puppies scratching themselves bloody and ending up with scabs and bald patches from untreated itching, I was surprised and relieved to find something that actually worked available at a local pet store. I'm sure I'll have to reapply tonight or tomorrow morning, but at least I'm no longer helpless in the face of his itching. Sorry for the diatribe, hope this helps.
