Question about Neutering and Baby Teeth I just did a search here on neutering age when I read about the baby teeth thing. Maximus was born on 9/4 and he is scheduled to get neutered on 1/26 because at his last visit he had already "dropped". I'm not sure my vet knows about the baby teeth thing, it was never mentioned. What are the odds that he will have to have baby teeth extracted? Do all Yorkies need this? I may give them a call today and see what they know about it. He will be almost 5 months when he has his surgery. Most everything I read here says wait until 6 months or later? I just want to get him fixed ASAP to avoid marking. Any kind opinions or suggestions coveted. Thanks! :) |
I have always waited with my males until I know their baby teeth is in that way they only have to undergo one surgery. Usually another month or two is not a big deal. You can use belly bands in the mean time! Hope this helps. I know others will be along with other suggestions. :) |

I had my Kalani neutered at 4 1/2 months of age because his sister couldn't be spayed due to a heart murmur. I wish I had waited another month or two, only because it was a bear trying to get rid of his retained puppy teeth. At 15 months he still had one left - I flossed around it and wiggled it and gave him lots to chew on and just when I was about to give up and let him have surgery it fell out:rolleyes: |
Do you actually look in their mouths and see their baby teeth? I guess I'm not sure I know the difference. I do not have a female (in the house), although there is a small stray hanging around, and I really don't know if she is fixed or not. If the teeth are not removed, what happens? Are they in pain? Do they get crooked teeth? Sorry for all the questions. |

The adult teeth are much bigger than puppy teeth. Some dogs don't lose their puppy teeth until they are a year old. My male Cody (who never marked in the house until I got my female) lost all of his baby teeth between 6-12 months, where Bella, turned a year back in october and still has two of the teeth that I need to have pulled now that she is older. Some vets will do it early and some won't. My vet doesn't like to until they are closer to a year old because they can still fall out on their own. Now with Bella still having two of the baby teeth left, food is getting caught between the teeth and I have to floss her teeth to make sure they don't get bad. |

If baby teeth are not removed, a double row of teeth are formed, this can cause a bad bite, as well as a crevice for food to lodge, leading to decay and infection. Dental problems are one of the weaknesses of Yorkies, and good dental hygiene is important to their overall health. By the way, baby teeth are extreemly sharp, and that might help you tell the difference. It's not necessary for a female to be around before a male begins to mark. |
Has your yorkie started lifting his leg yet? I know my sons male lifted his leg at 12 weeks, and unfortunately, when he got neutered at 5 or 5 1/2 mos. he still kept lifting it in the house. I would just ask your vet what he thinks. I know my son has my female also, and she's 1 1/2 and just lost a couple of her baby teeth. |
Thanks for all the comments. Well, if lifting his leg means when he goes potty, then yes. He has been lifting his leg. kind of like he doesn't want to pee on it. lol |
Marking is different, they will mark if they need to show that it's his house, say if another dog came in, or if a female is in heat or at least as Cody does, she has a GOOD smell. |
Here is an interesting article on the pro's and con's for spaying and neutering. You also have to consider what is in the best interest of your dog's health. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf As for baby teeth. From my experience they usually lose all their baby teeth before they are a year old but there are exceptions. The small yorkies seem to be more prone to retaining baby teeth and I think that might be because they don't chew as much on hard things. All the permanent teeth do not come in until the puppy is 6 to 8 months old. Here is a very interesting article on puppy teeth from a Pom breeder: Bi-Mar Pomeranians - Teeth Cleaning |
