Bully Sticks Has anyone used the treat, Bully Sticks? They sound like they would be ok. My vet and breeder warned against giving Brady rawhide and I want to keep his teeth clean. Our Corky before him had terrible teeth but he would not chew on toys or good treats. In fact, when he was 1 and my grandson was born everyone would say "no" when he got near the baby's toys and then he wouldn't play with anything. Thanks Lorraine:animal-pa:wavey::thumbs up |
Yes, I give Joey Merrick Bully sticks, they are 100% digestable, he loves them and I think they do a great job helping to keep teeth free of tartar. We also use the Petzlife gel a couple of times a week and that's said to soften tartar, and I think the chewing action of the treats help scape it a way. We also do the regular tooth brushing. |
What exactly is a bully stick made of? |

Thanks - where do you buy them? I looked online and they are so expensive - like $3 each. How about flossies? I saw those mentioned here on Yorkie talk one time. We are very faithful about brushing Brady's treats and will have to try the gel you mentioned. I am also retired and have 2 grown sons and a daughter in law and 2 grandsons 25 and 14. Wish we lived closer as we have some things in common. I live in Florida. Lorraine and Brady |
Just noticed that you had posted where to buy them. I saw that about bull penises - - -sounds gross but as long as I don't have to eat them I'm ok!!! ha h a Lorraine |

No, I just thought you can read about them there, you can get them better prices elsewhere. |
I give mine bully sticks. I only get them from http://www.westbrookdog.com/ AMD is her user name. They don't stink at all!:thumbup: |
I haven't checked ebay yet but will do it. Right now it is 11 pm. and I still have to balance my checkbook before I go to bed. Yuk. What does joining YAP entail besides joining on Yorkie Talk? Is there a fee? I sent a donation in back in Oct. and I think it was for that. Maybe I'm a member??? Lorraine |

By the way, I didn't see any good deals on e-bay tonight, they also sell them on Amazon, and maybe you can find them there. I know you can find them for less then $3.00. |

Her favorite, though, are the Merrick (curly) Flossies. She LOVES  these!! Her first one was finished in 3 days. Now, though, they last much longer. That's because Lexi will carry one around, crying, looking for the "perfect" spot to store it. Then, it may stay in storage for days and days. On occasion, I will just find one laying in the middle of the floor, but most of the time, it is very important for her to hide them. Her crate, and the laundry basket are two of her favorite spots. And then once in a while, I will actually see her chewing on one! She's got probably 3 or 4 now, but I wouldn't know because they are all hidden. :) |
I guess I read it wrong - I thought you said you got them on ebay. Just checked the YAP members and I am not there. You said a Bully stick will last Joey a week? How do you get it away from him each day?????? Lorraine |

I have always told people not to buy from a pet store and even some of the breeders aren't reputable. I did a lot of research before getting Brady and a breeder here in Florida told me about a breeder in Tennessee who used to live in Florida and that is where I got him. She has a web site showing where her dogs live and it looks like a hotel!! Her husband brought him down to us so we didn't have to go to Tennessee and I never would have put him on a plane in baggage. We fly with him but he goes under the seat in front of us and his ticket is $300. round trip!!!!!!!!! He doesn't even get Sky miles or a treat!!!!!! |
I give mine C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews, my daughter works at a vet and my own vet recommended them for dental care. My dog loves them. |
I'm not sure about what this website sells, but I am pretty sure it was recommended by a YT member: Bully Sticks – All Natural Dog Treats - Best Bully Stick Here's an old thread on bully sticks: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...llysticks.html This seller on ebay has Flossies and bully sticks (not sure what brand): eBay Store - Pet Treats: All, Filters Media, Grooming Another old thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ly-sticks.html |

Lol, it's no fair that they don't get Sky miles! |
So they definitely ARE digestable? Wookie loves them, but I took away anything like that, rawhides and all after he had his exploratory surgery. Cause it wasn't completely ruled out that wasn't what was stuck in his intestines. I also have a friend with a Frenchie that chewed on rawhide til it got real sticky then got a piece off and it got stuck in her throat and almost choked to death. Is this a threat with the bullies too? I hate that I am not giving him anything like that to chew on anymore (except a stinky pig hoof!) and he loves the bullies so much, I would like to be able to give them back to him, if I can do so safely. |
I was also wondering how safe the bully sticks are. I am so afraid of small pieces breaking off and causing problems. I was using nylabones which worked fine for the first several months but now my little Kay T has became an aggressive chewer and I want something safe (or as safe as we can get). |

I think they are as safe as you can get since they are 100 percent digestible, this means that no small pieces can lodge in the intestines and cause an obstruction. They say that any chew food or toy should be used with supervision. Some dogs will try to swallow things whole, and watching how your dog uses it will give you a better idea. |
Thanks Nancy. |

My vet also recommended the C..E.T. Enymatic treats. But -- we have been giving them as his "special treat" for special occasions like haircut, bath, nails etc. and giving him something else for a regular treat. I want to switch and have the C>E>T. treats more often and use something else for a "special" treat and I was thinking about the bully sticks. Lorraine |

I actually don't think of Bully Sticks as a "treat", although he loves them, they aren't the instant gratification that you get when you give them a food product. The bully sticks are a hard chewing stick that helps to clean their teeth, as well as take care of the chewing needs, so that they won't chew on other things. They are food in the sense that they are digestible protein, but it takes so long too get any. For rewards for being good, many people use plain old cheerios. Other options are vegetables, Joey loves green beans, the frozen variety, not the canned, as it contains to much salt. |
