What Do I Do? Ok, I feed Lilbug  Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream and she loves the food and I do too (I love that she loves it, I haven't tasted it or anything) :p. Where I used to live (I moved the middle of last month:thumbup:), I would buy her food from Feeder's Supply. Now, Feeder's Supply is around a hour away so I was just going to order it online to save myself the trip. Then, I found out they sell it at Tractor Supply Company which I was completely ecstatic about. :jump28ib: So, I've been staying with my mom this week and had to run back up where I live because Lilbug was almost out of food. I bought a bag and went on my merry little way. Last night I opened the bag and poured her some out and the food smelled pretty fresh (almost like any bag of food smells when you first open it) so decided to check the date. It has a Best By date of December 31st 2008. This food will last us a little over a month, most likely longer... I'm confused  on what to do. I think I need to take it back but my mom thinks it will be fine. I know the ins and outs of best by dates on people foods but don't know how they vary on dry dog food. So?! Thanks in advance friends! :p |
I can only say what I would do. With people food, we can always taste a small bite if it smells fine and decide. Since we don't eat kibble;), we have no idea if it is "off" or not. I would hesitate to feed it and ask the company at th least most likely. |
It's fine. It's best if used by that date, means that it just loses some of its flavor after that date. I have had stuff that has said best by and I've used it 2-3 years after the date, with it just not being as strong. Do you pour it in to an airtight container? I was buying that for mine for awhile, got kind of expensive with 4 little dogs and 2 big ones on it. Do they sell it in a small bag, or just the huge bags still? |

No, I bought an air tight container and it was broke so I have to get another one. |

Will an air tight container say it's air tight? I always thought any plastic container that had a lid was air tight but I'm a bimbo, so. |

I wouldn't just be worried about it getting wormy. Dog food, especially "holistic" kinds that are preserved naturally can go bad easier than foods preserved with things like ethoxyquin. I would just be very careful if I was going to feed past dated food and talk to the company. That is if that date was the expiration date. If it is a best by date, there shouldn't be a problem except that it loses some nutritional value which I wouldn't be comfortable with either. |

It's only 10 days past the date, it's not going to hurt the dog, but, yes, def. let the place where you bought it from know. If you still have the receipt, and you're close by, you could take it back. I would be more concerned it it were a few mos past due the date. It's a law, they have to put dates on them to where back in my days, nothing was dated. |
i was reading something online about this before.. not about dog food but about like potato chips. we sell snacks and stuff where i work and we always throw out the chips that are out of the best if eaten by date or whatever.. anyways, i read that the products that say "best if used by" means that the manufacturer recommends using the product by that date for the best flavor/quality & that its NOT a food safety date. so i guess like the taste and nutrient value gradually changes after that date but it doesnt mean the food is expired. so its more of a freshness date i guess? i'd just go back there and swap it out for a newer one. either it doesn't sell and its been sitting there for a while or people that work there probably put the newer food in the front/on top instead of going by the dates and pulling the older food to the front so people by that first. who knows. |
