Help switching food Krissy is now on Royal Canine which is what she came fromt eh breeder on. She scratches a lot and has a rash on her back between her shoulders. We are trying to get her switched over. I tried Natural Balance but that didnt' go well. We then tried Nature's Recipe (that is the caned food she eats) and she will eat it but only a little after she has picked out all of the RC. I have some samples of Life's Abundance, Chicken Soup, and Wellness to try. Do I just give her a few pieces of the samples by themselves to see which one she will eat then mix with the RC? She is almost 4 months. We had a bad scare with hypo at first but otherwise she is very healthy. I just want her on a food that will stop her itching. If it weren't for that I would just leave her on the RC. I think she really likes the size of the pieces. |
I don't know much about switching foods with a pup that gets hypo, but I do have experience with scratching. There were two causes of scratching for us. One cause may not require you to change foods. The first problem could be a yeast infection or fungus infection. (If it's in her ears and on her nose it's called leather ear, I believe.) Anyway it seems that yorkies are prone to fungal type infections. A solution of 1% lotrimin (athlete's foot medicine) or an antifungal from your vet may clear it up. Daisy's fungal infection started with a rash between her shoulder blades.....which sounds like your problem..... Also, Daisy scratches when she eats food that has corn, wheat or dyes in it. I don't know if all of these cause the scratching or just one - it seems that a food that has one of these ingredients has all of them. Good Luck - that scratching about drove us all crazy!!! |
My puppy had a hard time with Wellness. It was really rich and it made her stool loose and bloody. she eats Canidae now but I dont think she really likes it. she takes a long time to eat a bowl. I was thinking of changing her to Merrick it looks tasty but I am also afraid that it too will be too rich. When I switch her food I mix it with the new with the old a little more each time until after about 7 days she is eating all of the new food. |
Krissy is going to the vet next week and we are going to ask about the rash. her itching isn't constant but enough to notice. I know I have read here a lot of yorkies are itching with the RC. I am mixing the food but she will push it around until she picks out all the RC and then just eat the nature's recipe when she is really hungry. SHe gets canned food in morning and late evening so she eats enough to wait that out. When my husband gave her straight RC by mistake yesterday she ate the whole bowl right there. I am going to open the samples and see if she will eat any of them alone and is she does try mixing the RC with those and see if I can switch her. Maybe she just doesn't like the NR. I really thinkit is the size. We have to break treats small as well. The RC is very tiny bites. |
you might want to try grain-free foods for your dog. My dog had similar rash problems when he was on certain foods, and I later learned he was allergic to grains and corn. I've switched him over to Taste of the Wild and all of this skin problems are gone. You could give it a try and see how it works for your dog. |
