Small brown spots on her back I posted this on the Sick/Injured thread, then realized this thread would be more appropriate: I noticed some (maybe 5 or 6) small brown spots on Olivia's back and she has been scratching. She is on Frontline Plus. I gave her a bath tonight and filled the sink with water; I did notice a couple of fleas in the water. Could these brown spots be flea bites? Should I take her to the vet? She has a grooming appt at PetSmart on Saturday - will they take her if these are flea bites? |
They are probably not flea bites but what's called flea dirt. It's flea poop so to speak. You can probably loosen some with your nails....wipe it on a damp paper towel...if it's flea dirt...it will turn red. She doesn't need to see the vet although frontline may not be working for her. It doesn't work on all dogs. Be sure not to bath her for 24 hours after applying...and only use dog shampoo...anything with a sudsing agent can render the frontline ineffective |
Deb - thanks for your reply; no, it's not flea poop...(unfortunately I know what that is, my previous dog seemed to be super-proned to fleas!). This is more like a scab, although it's not as bumpy as a regular scab and is a medium brown color and about half the size of an eraser on the top of a pencil. They do seem to be fading since her bath in Cranberry Fields shampoo/conditioner last night, and I haven't seen her scratch today either. I wonder if the Frontline Plus is even working though since she just had a dose 2 weeks ago, so I thought I'd ask the vet about Comfortis. |
I'd bet $100 it's a fungal infection like ringworm. My pup had it and it started just like you are describing. I've seen many other threads with the same symptoms. I'd try an over the counter anti-fungal product like lotrimin for about a week. If you don't see improvment get a scraping at the vet. They can give you a prescription that is stronger. Either way, check your pup's nose and ears for hair loss as this is fungal too. It seems that yorkies are prone to yeast (fungal) infections - especially when they are young. Let me know if it helps! :animal36 |
I will keep an eye on it - fungal infection?! The spots seem to have gotten better but I will make sure...thanks. |
