Please..I need your help. * Royal Canin Prescription My vet wants Romeo to eat Royal Canin Prescription food for allergies. He has a bad anal gland problem with pus and blood. She thinks it may be from allergies. I asked her if he could have Wellness Simple Solutions and she said no! Is the Royal Canin a good food?. Please give your opinion. I am very upset and not a big fan of Royal Canin. He ate the Yorkie Formula years ago and had corn related allergies. This prescription doesn't have corn , but I feel there may be better food for allergies. HYPOALLERGENIC HP 19 |

I hate prescriptions foods, too. Lady has been diabetic for eight years and I refused from day one to put her on Hills W/D. I swear that's why she's lived so long. All the other dogs on the canine diabetes forum I belong to who were diagnosed at the same time and on prescription diets died years ago. The primary ingredient in that diet is rice. I don't see any corn. Short term it's probably not going to hurt him, but if he needs a special diet long term I would look into homecooking. |

I don't like RC either but it may be unavoidable. Does he have soft stool/are the glands not being emptied when he has a bowel movement? If the vet really does believe it is food allergies causing this, there are other foods that may work. However, this sounds serious and you may just want to go with the vet's advice. If you want to experiment, there is always Natural Balance sweet potato and duck and California Natural. |

Ugh on those diets. Can you explain in detail more about her symptoms and the poo? The vet did a fecal I'm sure? If this were me, I'd homecook a fish diet (hypoallergenic gives small intestine time to heal/rest) or I'd do Natural Balance, Simple Solutions, and/or a fish kibble. I would also give this probiotic/digestive enzyme combo asap: Nature's Farmacy - Store - Product Details |

I feed Royal Canin. I think the company does a lot of research and has developed foods for the needs of different breeds. A long haired small breed dog definitely has different nutritional requirements than a short haired large breed. It can't hurt to give it a try to see if the problem goes away. |

My dachshunds have been on RC Urinary SO for about 5 yrs now, and they have been fine. They hypoallergenic of RC is not that bad. Just see how it works out, and take it from there! Good Luck! |

Ingredients: Dog Food Reviews - Royal Canin Veterinary Diet canine Hypoallergenic HP 19 - Powered by ReviewPost It doesn't look too good at all. The protein seems very restricted for a healthy dog. |

I used to feed RC and it was fine for my girls. I think it was Yorkshire 28. I feed my girls Innova now though. No real reason, just wanted something a little more wholistic. I think you can give it a try for a few months then take him back to the vet to see if there's any improvement. |

I feed Royal Canin too and have for years. I'm not dissatisfied with it, but when I just checked it on dogfoodanalysis.com, I was very unhappy with its rating and the description of the ingredients. |

Try going to "dogfoodanalysis.com". They rate all the dog food there. I am very sure Royal Canine is not highly rated. I feed mine Orijen Dry Adult. Grain-free. He was on Wellness and had very loose stools and foul smelling gas. He is doing amazing on Orijen. It is rated 6 stars. I've done much research and many dogs have allergies to grains. I personally would never feed my dog Royal Canine. Good Luck! |

I bought the RC and I just don't feel confident feeding him food without an animal protein. I feel that they weren't willing to look into Wellness Simple Solutions. They said their lots vary from batch to batch. I just want his bottom to get better. I am so upset. He was eating Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. It was the only food he would eat. I know it's not the best. The vet said it was good and the lamb and rice is easy on his tummy. (He had this blood bubble back in Nov too) |

Poor baby!! Give him lots of hugs and kisses from me!! |

He will probably be safer on RC than Nutro. There are just too many reports of illness and death with that food. Is he even refusing canned food? Probably not a good idea for anal glands though. If a hypoallergenic diet is what the vet wants, maybe Science Diet would be slightly better for ingredients? Possibly not though. Unless you want to talk to a nutritionist, if the vet won't work with you on a different food, I would get a second opinion or feed the RC. I know most of us hate the thought of rx food but there are just sometimes when it is the best opinion, especially if you want to go with kibble. It happens sometimes and you have to do what you have to do. |

I've had my 2 on Royal Canin for 6 months now. Sammy no longer has skin problems or vomiting/diarrhea. They both are doing really well on it! I use adult dog # 27... :) |
