How often to brush teeth? best tooth brush How often should i brush my yorkie teeth? and what would be the best tooth brush and toothpaste i can use for him? is the petzlife gel good enough or would i need another toothpaste? |
Every day would be preferred. Yorkies tend to develope bad teeth and gums if they dont get proper treatment. I do my girls teeth everyday and my vet is always complimenting them. |
we use Petzlife on the girls.. there is a spray and a gel! love this stuff! ;) :) it's SUPER easy & works great! :) |
Every single day is how often teeth should be brushed. Whatever works best for you and your yorkie is what you should use!!! Personally, I use a piece of gauze wrapped around my finger to brush their teeth. I can make sure to get at each tooth, front, back and around them without hurting their gums and they cooperate with this when they wouldn't with any type of brush including a finger brush. I also use PetzLife Gel a few times a week after I brush. |
They should be brushed everyday if possible. I use a toddler toothbrush for Ellie and CET vanilla-mint toothpaste. There is a lot of controversy surrounding Petzlife. I bought it and have stopped using it. You might want to search for old threads on YT about it before using. |

I have never heard anything bad about Petzlife and have been using it on my Yorkie for about 6 months. What did you hear, negatively, about it? He also uses C.E.T. Thanks, Prince's mom |
is Petzlife Gel safe on small dogs? (3 lb) i don't know why a lot of dental chews say not good for dogs under 5 lbs  |

Since only a small amount of Petzlife is used, it may be just fine and alcohol is added to some things to brin out affects of other ingredients but there is some concern that it could be toxic, especially in such small dogs. There is a board certified dog dentist in the NY area who told one of YT's members that it could make a Yorkie drunk. Too much alcohol can lead to very serious issues. Now that probably wouldn't happen with the small amount used daily but a few of us have decided that it isn't worth the risk. Petzlife also says there are no reported side effects which may be true. Maybe nobody has told them about the stomach upset that a few dogs have gotten from it... If you search "Petzlife" on YT, you can read both sides of the debate. |
I have a vanilla mint flavor from my vet. It was decently priced. I like it because it has a minty smell so it helps her breath a bit. I only brush their teeth twice a week (we just started at christmas) but I want to get it up to almost everday. The people that had a 2 year old before us, didn't brush her teeth--so we had the vet clean them yesterday (hopefully that will help with her breath). However, I find it kind of annoying when I get tooth past on their facial fur. I pretty much find I have to bath them to get it completely off. but it could be because I am still new at the brushing (and the fact that you would think i was trying to murder the two year old when I brush her teeth--she HATES it!)! |

I buy those firefly toothbrushes - they are like 2 for 99c at Target. They are the perfect size! Don't buy a dog toothbrush because you can only use the smaller end anyway. And those ones with the 3 angles are too big to fit in little Yorkie mouths. Just use a regular toothbrush and buy extra because they get chewed up and nasty after a month or so :) |
