Dog food question I see a lot of threads about what dog food brands NOT to use, but what DO you guys recommend? You could say I'm new to having my dog, even though I've had her since she was a puppy- I had to give her to my sister for a year and a half due to housing complications. I recently got her back and I want to make sure I do things right now that she's "mine" again. Please recommend dog food to me- she seems to do fine with what we've been giving her, but if it's bad for her I want to change it ASAP. I can't do the homecooking thing even though i'd LOVE to be able to, but let's be honest I can't even cook for myself... Thank you!!! |
You will find people who love and people who hate about every brand out there. I feed Royal Canin, but some people will say it is bad. My dogs actually prefer Purina dog chow. Most people will tell you that is terrible food, but a lot of dogs have lived long healthy happy lives on it. My theroy, feed them what they will eat. ANY food is better than NO food. |
We ALL have our own opinions about which dog food to use/not to use. Most of us are down-right opinionated about it, that's for sure! Unfortunately the dog food industry is just damn shady right now, and it's a very scary thing. There are plenty on here who have resorted to homecooking, raw and prey-model raw to get away from commercial kibble. I think the key is to do your own research, so you can feel confident in what to feed your baby. It's easy to ask and get an answer, and just go with that suggestion without doing your own research. I prefer to do my own research, ask opinions about the particular method/brand and then use that information to make my own choice. But I'm sure you will gets lots of input shortly!! |

Generally speaking- stay clear of anything with bi-products listed in its ingredients. Stay away from corn as many dogs are allergic to it. Look for ingredients that you recognize :p chicken, fish, veggies, rice, potato... If you are looking for somewhere to start- some brands that I would probably feed (i home cook) are Wellness, Merricks has a new food- Before Grain- I personally like grain free foods but that is just preference..... Nature's Variety has a few great kibbles... Orijen has had a few controversies in the past- but I still think it is a good food. good luck :) Its hard and daunting- but you have to feel good about what you feed... and to me that means feeding the best ingredients possible. |

we feed Nature's Variety RAW medallions & Nature's Variety instinct canned (venison). we also feed Ziwi Peak. and rotate a few other RAW foods as well.. such as The Honest Kitchen & Primal. we leave kibble out 24-7 (just in case..) but they don't eat much of it.. their main diet consists of what i listed above! ;) the kibble we are feeding at the moment is Nature's Variety Instinct! :) good luck!! :) |
I'm still learning myself. Maximus was weaned on Puppy Chow. After finding YT, I found out that that was not the best choice in the world. After hearing good things (and finding a local store that carried it) about Canidae, I bought a bag. Then I heard that the company changed manufacturers and their recipe changed making some fur babies sick (Maximus did fine on it). I decided to try something else, and currently we are using Canine Caviar. I'm sure I will read something negative about it before long, but for now, that is what we are on (chicken and millet puppy formula). |
Yes, we all have different opinions. But there are a lot of good choices available - one website that has a great break down of the foods and their ingredients is Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble - I would recommend a 4or 5 star food, some people believe the 6-star foods are too high in protein for the yorkie. You have to remember that site is also someone's opinions Also, if you have a local pet good store that carries a wide selection of high quality food, go in and talk with the owner or well-educated employees. These people know a lot & hear what customers are saying. I like Innova, but for grain free I would go with Merrick's Before Grain or the Nature's Variety medallions If your only choices for buying food at a store are slim, I would recommend Solid Gold at Petco or Blue BUFFALO at Petsmart |
My 6 month old baby is thriving on Beneful Puppy. She gets a scrambled eggs about twice a week. |
Blue Buffalo (small kibbles for picky eaters) or Solid Gold. Both are excellent choices. Check their web site and check with your vet. I never feed canned dog food, only kibbles. My vet has sample packets of Blue Buffalo; you may want to check with yours before purchasing. You can return either the Blue Buffalo or Solid Gold to the place of purchase if you are not happy with it, although I never have. |
Great- thanks for the advice everyone! |
Glad you and your "pup" are back together again. The boys are doing ok on the various "flavors" of Merrick canned as a wetting ingredient and Natural Balance kibble. As everyone has stated, "You have to read the labels". |
II feed taste of the wild... This was recommended to me here on Yt over a year ago. My bunch loves it and it is listed as a 6 star food. They did however have a recall several months back... Fortunately Texas was not included. Just realized this thread is from 2009... How in the world did I find this?? Lol... Sorry! |
Whatever you pick. I suggest the first 3-4 ingredients aren't filler foord like Corn,Corn meal wheat or any other type of grain. Futher down the line not so bad. The first 3 should be a meat base, Like Chicken ,Chicken meal ect I wouldn't buy food 100% made in China either. Guess my oops also :) |
There are hardened opinions on foods for sure. I prefer low alletgen grainless foods. I fed Innova switched to ataste of the Wild and now feed the BARF diet. I think it's incredible important to remember its not about the brand even as much as the varying flavors. Ive hears great things thay have me considering blue biffal0s &fromm as a kibble sup. But remember like with TOTW my dogs did poorly on the lamb and great on the wetlands roasted foul. |
