How often should I feed Oliver?
 
Oliver's breeder had been feeding him a mix of dry kibble, wet food, and a bit of canned pumpkin. She fed him twice daily...once in the morning and once at night. I've been following her schedule since I've only had him for three days. But I've been reading that young puppies should be fed three or four times a day. Should I be feeding him more often and if so how long should I wait to change the schedule?

How old is Oliver, how much does he weigh and what food are you feeding him? Congrats on your new baby.

Hello
I feed my Oliver and Cooper 3 times a day. They only get about 1/4 cup of kibble in the a.m. and for lunch and for din din they get kibble with some wet food mixed in.
So far so good, I don't have chubby babies and they are really regular. :)

Oliver is eight weeks old. I'm not sure how much he weighs because the last time the breeder took him to the vet he didn't weigh him. At five weeks he was 1.2 pounds, Now though, he's a big boy ..I'm guessing about three pounds..will find out soon at the vet. I'm currently feeding him what my breeder was feeding him...dry purina puppy formula (1/2 cup) and wet puppy complete nutrition (1/4 cup) Is this too much if he is only eating twice a day?. Is there anything better?

Yep, there is lots better food out there, but for now stick with the purina. As he is only eight weeks (really, really young to have left mommy!) I think it's pretty important that he eats more that 2x a day. You don't have to wait to change this schedule, I just wouldn't change the actual food at this time.

Can you leave his food out for him? That would probably be ideal at this point. If that won't work out, start feeding him every four or five hours. Say 7am, 12pm, 4pm and 8pm, just an example. With him being so young and the stress of "moving out," it's important that he gets bits of food all day to prevent any hypoglycemia. In the meantime, it's a perfect time to start researching dog food! When he's had time to settle and is ready to change, you'll be all up to speed and will know which direction you want to go with the food. Good luck!

I feed my Oliver (4 lbs) and Cooper (7lbs) Wellness. It is a great puppy food. Cooper will be one in 17 days so i think it is time for a change for him.
I also give them Avoderm Vegetarian wet food. Man, what great food these
babies get. I also include a few squirts of Nutrastat throughout the day.
Good luck with your new baby! It is a challenge with new pups. I am just figuring mine out after 7 mo. of hard work and LOTS of love!!!

I free feed my doggies , I always have. They regulate themselves well but sometimes if I feel like they are not eating enough ,I will put a little in the bowl and wait till they eat some then I will add more , just to ease my mind that they are getting enough. Good luck with your new baby :)

Thanks! I will definitely change his schedule tomorrow. I was beginning to notice that he was so hungry at dinner time from not eating since morning. How much should I be giving him each time?

I would switch foods but not at this time. He needs time to settle in.
A Yorkie pup should be fed at least 3-4 times a day (more so for an 8-wek-old) or free fed. You could leave out kibble all day and give small amounts of canned throughout the day. You have to watch your dog's body condition to figure out how much to feed. Start with what the bag or can says and adjust from there. You can also find charts online about how many calories dgos should get (make sure the charts includes a section for pups) and calcute how many a day he should have. Then read the food labels and figure out how many calories per cup and figure it out from there.
