Flea help Hi, I'm new and I desperately need some answers. I bath my Yorkie every 2 weeks. I have tried several different shampoos that claim not to wash the Advantage off, but needless to say she ends up with fleas 24 hours after her bath. My vet feels that Advantage is safe to put on her every 2 weeks and she is also on Sentinel which supposedly inhibits flea reproduction. The problem is Maisy acts very strange when I put Advantage on. She runs around in circles and seems to get very depressed. I'm not sure how safe this is for her. I have tried to Comfortis but it only works for 24 hours. She is just 4 pounds and the Vet will not give her the oral flea control pill. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks! |
I have no idea why advantage is not working, but my vet said they have had a lot of complaints about it and he uses Frontline. I would not put it on every 2 weeks no matter what the vet says. it sounds like you have a bad flea problem in yiour home. You need to treat your entire home and pay special attention to the dog beds. You can also bath your dog with Dawn dishsoap. It does work to rid your dog of fleas but will not prevent them from returning. If you do not get the problem under control it can cause your dog to develop allergies to the flea bits an ultimately cause bad skin infections that are extremely hard to get rid of. If it were me, I would also treat the area around the house for fleas and then keep the dog inside, if the infestation is that bad in yiour area. |
If you are having a flea problem, you probably have them IN your house. This is what we did after months of bathing and products... Each animal, whether infested or not, got a pill called CapStar. It is a 24 hour pill, BUT it kills everything inside and out of their body in 30 minutes. 30 minutes AFTER the CapStar is given, we put vectra (a gel that you put starting at their shoulders in a line down the back), which prevents, kills, etc fleas and flea eggs. We then got all the animals out of the house, bug bombed it, came back 6 hours later and vacuumed, then steam cleaned the carpets and furniture.. Since then we have not had any problems. |
I would not continually put a drug on her like Advantage every 2 weeks. If you were to put water on the same spot on her back, does she run around and get depressed? Or is it just with the Advantage? If it is just with the med, it is causing a problem (irritation at the very least) and I would never use it again. Have you tried Frontline Plus and don't bathe her for 2-4 days after applying it? |
My yorkie Milo spends alot of time outdoors playing and camping. This past summer he was bitten by fleas, cuz i didn't know about advantix/frontline. He is my first dog. I decided to shave him and gave him a 15 min bath with water up to his neck. No lie, about 6 fleas floated to the surface. I took him out, dryed him off and applied a/d ointment to his bites. A little while later i checked on his bites and found 2 fleas stuck to the layer of ointment. i grabbed the fleas with my gf's tweezers and burned them with my lighter. repeat step one till fleas are gone. Now i use advantix. no flea bites. hehe:D |
