free feeding our little kayden is now 9 weeks old. she was surprise gift to my daughter from her father (who doesn't live with us). i've already made mistakes...but have learned so much from this site, and have received excellent advice so far. thanks everyone! here's my question... come monday, i go back to work, and my daughter goes back to school. i've been feeding kayden 3 times a day because she gets hungry and sniffs her bowl and whines around 2 o'clock. well...we won't be able to do this anymore. i put a few pieces of her hard kibble in her bowl a couple times yesterday and today...and she gobbles them up likes it's gonna be her last meal! i'm worried that if i leave some in her bowl as i leave, she'll eat it all at once and get sick while i'm gone. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks kelli |
Hello and CONGRATS and WELCOME :D :D :D !!! Since she is very young (most breeders will not release their pups until 12 weeks old), I would absolutely free feed her kibble. She will likely eat just to instinct at this age. At this age, she is also still vulnerable to hypoglycemia (which yorkies are prone to) - so it is very important that she has enough food (and often enough) to keep her blood sugar normal. I used to feed kibble (I then moved to homecooking, and now raw) - and I free-fed ALL of my cats and dogs their whole lives and never had an issue w/ an overeater. They just self regulated. :) |
Yep We free feed to. I would start now putting a bowl down so you can watch her while your still here. If i put a couple of pieces of food in there bowl they will act like it's something special too. lol |
I don't think there is really a choice here because his safety is involved. He wil have to be able to eat during the day. A nine week old should be eating at least 4 times a day (in my opinion) and I would be more comfortable with more. Have you thought about a timed feeder if free feeding won't work for you? Or family or friends to babysit? |
All of my dogs a free fed. most yorkies do not over eat on kibble. |
I too free-feed kibble to my dogs. None of them overeat. With the age of your pup you will need to have food down at all times. Good luck! |
thank you thanks to all who replied. i left her food out today...she ate like crazy this am...and i think she may have made herself a little sick. she now just walks past her plate and looks and smells and walks on. i have to say...she was kinda cute doing her little 'waddle' around today. kelli |
I believe that Wylie's mom is probably the best person to respond to this topic. But to share my experience - I've always fed Bailey just twice a day - even when I brought her home at 9 weeks - and had no problems. When she was younger - I put toys in her pen that dispensed kibble when rolled around - but Bailey never played with them.... Good luck!!! |

I also free feed all of my animals and none of them are over weight, including my beagle and if anyone knows beagles they will eat everything in site..lol. I do believe they self regulate. I agree with what some of the others have said, your baby is still very little and needs to eat often. My 14 week old pup "snacks" often its only a few pieces at a time but I know he is getting enough. Once you start free feeding her more she will get use to it and not eat so fast.
