General Feeding Question
 
Is ONE cup of food per day the recommeded amount to feed a 5lb or 6lb Yorkie?

That's a very general question....what type of food are you using? Give more specifics and you'll find lots of support on this site....

That's quite a bit of food. What exactly are you feeding, and how old is your baby?

General Feeding Question
 
This is my son's dog. She is 8 years old. I have always watched her and took her to the vet for him (He works long hours).
You could say I am a concerned grandma.

The 5.5lb Yorkie is fed Hills Pet W/D dry due to an liver condition. her food was cut back to 1/2 cup per day in the effort to housebreak her. (new wife's idea). This dog's weight was usually around 7 to 7.5 lbs.
When I saw her on Christmas day, I was shocked. When I picked her up, I noticed her back bone sticking out. She had lost 2 lbs. I told my Son I was taking her to the Vet the very next day, as she was also due for a blood and urine test. The Vet said she was dehydrated and had lost too much weight. I also discovered that water was not being made available at all times (also new wife's housebreaking idea).
The recommended amount to feed W/D for 5 to 10 lb dog is ONE CUP PER DAY, not 1/2 CUP, so I wanted to get some input from other Yorkie owners as to how they feed their Yorkie.

Poor little girl! I cannot believe how people can be so cruel as to withhold food and water in effort to housebreak any animal. Breaks my heart. Is there anyway you can take the dog out of their home and care for her the rest of her life? With her already being liver compromised she really needs diligent care. Since you have already taken her in for blood work (that would have been my first suggestion), I would start feeding her 1/4 cup, three times per day. That would give her 3/4 cup per day and may allow her to start gaining weight. Gosh, this story is really sad, I hope you can take her. She doesn't deserve to be somewhere she isn't loved and cared for properly. :( Bless your heart for being a "concerned grandma."

Believe me, I have tried many times to get my Son to give her to me, but he insures me he will feed and water her properly. Since the vet wrote a note stating that she was dehydrated and had lost too much weight, he finally realizes that their housebreaking ideas was not good for her afterall. I will surely watch to make sure that happens. Thanks for your feedback.
