another neutering question I have Turkleton scheduled for surgery on the 22nd of this month. I was told to bring him in the afternoon before the procedure and pick him up in the (early)evening after the surgery. So, basically 3 days and 2 nights. I like the vet a lot, but I'm wondering if this much time away from home may cause extra stress on Turk. He's never spent a night away from us since we brought him home let alone two. Would this be considered standard protocol? btw- I am told the procedure will be done with laser. |
Unless I'm reading that wrong...it's one night...you take him the afternoon before and pick him the the next day after his surgery. None of mine have gone earlier than the morning of and I have always picked mine up the same day as their surgery. Unless there is someone there at the clinic overnight (which there is not)...I'll monitor mine at home. |
My boys' vet is one of our best friends, and I would never leave one there for something like a neuter with a laser. I would speak with your vet and voice your concerns. Worst case he won't do it and you find someone else... |
3 days and 2 nights? Bailey was there early morning and I picked him up the next day. I have a great vet who spends the night the day he does surgery and he takes the next day off. I'm not sure about the laser surgery for neutering but I wouldn't want to go that route. |
They wanted me to bring him in the day before(which would be one night), and then again on the day of the surgery. I'm sorry if I sound ignorant about this, our other 2 dogs are female and it was done years ago, but I want to say they came home the same day and everything was pretty easy peasy. I was just told by the lady scheduling the appointment that the laser technique was better ..one reason being that there is less blood. I am open to all opinions of laser surgery VS. standard because I want to do what's best/safest for my dog. Thanks again :) |
I think the laser surgery is fantastic, I just don't see the need for two nights?? You will have to withhold his food and water the night before, but I'm pretty sure you can handle that  You also have to keep him quiet and no jumping (most important that first night), but I'm pretty sure you can handle that also..... You need to call and actually speak with your vet before you agree to that, unless you're ok with him being there two nights. |

I will definitely give them a call to get more information/details. Perhaps speak with a tech at the very least. I was just googling the laser neutering. I read a whole lot of praise, but most said that this made for a quicker recovery which is why I need to know why they find it necessary for him to stay so long. You guys have been real helpful. |
