She is getting too Skinny!!! Help!! Hello, My four month old yorkie is currently only 2 pounds. She never seems interested in food. We leave her 24 access to dry food and feed her 4x with a wet and dry mix. Her bones currently stick out and she barely has a waist. She will eat treats. I know its not good but I give her lots of them everyday. I dont know what to do anymore. Does anyone have any ideas??? |
May I suggest you get some Nutrical if she isn't eating well. It will keep her from getting hypoglycemia. |

No, I only give treats if she refuses to eat her normal food. I am just trying to get something in her system for the day. I dont know how to get her interested in her dog food. It really scares me when she wont eat. I will try to use the food as treats and see what happens. Sometimes hand feeding her works for a little while. |
We ran into a little eating problem with Gucci a few months ago, but stuck with our guns and kept the treats down to a minimum. Of course, we sometimes had to hand feed him, but eventually he got the idea that he was only getting kibble for meals. A treat is just that . . . a treat. Mainly used for good behavior and training. He stayed at about 2# for a good while and then scooted up to 3 and now at 8 months he's around 4#. Stick with it, but be sure that your little one is getting SOMETHING to eat. We had one episode where he was weak and it's no fun. |

Thanks, I will try that. Also can anyone suggest a good wet food? My vet suggested Royal Cannin but I can only find that in dry food. The vet thinks that mixing of wet and dry will entice her to eat more. |
go online to the i believe lambert website it sells everything and order some DYNE and start giving that to her before bed.. it has alot of good stuff to build her up .. boil a piece of chicken breast and start giving that to her.. the start weaning her back to her food... no more treats ...at all .... good luck yes also get nutra cal.. |
Actually, before spending a lot on nutrical, just get some, if you don't already have it, white karo syrup. That is what the vet uses, and she said to only give my little one when she's not eating/drinking. You just take a little bit and rub on their gums. I do know what you're going through, as my little girl is almost 7 mos and weighs right close to 2 lbs. somedays her tummy growls and she won't eat, not even her morning treat. I usually rub the karo on her gums then, and usually within about 2-3 hours she will eat. |
hi, i completely understand what you are going through because up until a week ago my 10 wk old puppy wouldnt eat. i tried everything and he really loved the boiled chicken and ground beef. you can also try beef or chicken babyfoood (make sure there is no onion or garlic in the ingredients). i also use nutrical 3x a day usually half hour before meals. 2 or 3 fingertips will do. if she wont drink u can give her an icecube he liked to play with it and lick it. i hope this helps.. u can PM if ud like:thumbup: |
What are you feeding her currently? I also completely agree with Nancy about the treats. Your baby is actually training you. These guys are so smart and she knows now that if she doesn't eat her meal, she gets desert. I would cut all treats out, get her on a high quality canned food and start from there. You can eventually add in kibble later, but for now the canned might entice her. Please make sure it's of good quality though! I also have to say that I would get her into the vet's for a blood panel, as liver problems can often cause picky eating. You didn't say if she's actually lost weight, but I would be fairly concerned. A bile acid test isn't totally accurate at this age, but either that or just a full blood panel may be worth doing in this case. |
When I first brought Dixie home she would not eat much. I mixed very little wet food in with her dry food that she had been eating at the breeder. Just enough to coat the dry food and give it a little more flavor. This helped tremendously. I slowly weaned her off of it and she's eating her dry food just fine now. You do have to be careful with the treats. It's like a catch 22 because you want to use them to train, but even a little bit can hinder their appetite because they're so small. BTW...I use Royal Canin mini puppy 33, and have had good luck so far! Good luck! |
