Getting enough water with kibble ???? For now my dogs are both on Wilderness Blue buffalo dry kibble . I have been searching other foods , but for now they seem to like it well enough. My question is ....I heard that dogs need to drink more water when eating a high protein dry kibble...Is that true? I never really thought about her not having enough. I just figured she has it there so I guess she gets enough. But now I'm starting to wonder about it. I do see her drink but it's just a little here and there it seems. I give her an ice cube to play with so she can get more water when I notice her pee smells stronger , but never really thought about her not having enough long term... Should I give a little wet food in the mornings or even just water down the kibble bit ? Thanks :) |
The high protein should make her more thirsty. Dogs really don't need a whole lot of water so it's okay if she doesn't drink all the time. If you're worried about her water intake, you can add some water to the kibble or feed canned but dogs are pretty good about self regulating. One way to test whether or not she's dehydrated is to pull up her skin around the neck area. If it goes back to place fairly quickly, she's fine. Just be worried if it's slow returning to normal. |
Thanks :) It didn't seem to me she was drinking that much and I just wanted to make sure she was O.K. I did watch her and saw she was drinking, I guess I just forget how little she is sometimes when I see my other dog lapping up the water :) On our on going hunt for the perfect food for her , I seem to keep thinking I "got it" then ....more questions:rolleyes: |
Do you have water out all the time? Scooter sleeps with me in the master bedroom and while he doesn't always drink tons during the day, I have a waterbowl in my bathroom that he does drink out of at night. He is potty trained and we do not have issues with him going inside the house. I guess in between dreams at 2am he gets thirsty. Maybe yours does the same? I have waterbowls both upstairs and downstairs and that seems to help ensure he gets plenty of water. Good luck. |
Yes we keep water down all the time. She usually has a good drink in the morning but then it didn't seem to me she had much after that. I think I was just not seeing her drink so I assumed she wasn't. I watched her intake over over the past days , and she is drinking , just not big drinks at a time like I assumed she would ( I really need to stop assuming  :D) |
