when to neuter? I have a little male, he's about 4 months old, his birthday was August 22. Anyway, i have no intentions of breeding and i do want to get him fixed for obvious health reasons. I have got such conflicting opinions about when to do it. The vet says ASAP, because after 6 months he can reach puberty at any time and may become more aggressive. To be honest hes got such a great disposition i hate to think it may change so that makes me nervous. I have read that some say 6 months, some 8, some say 2 years! He does seem very small now for any sort of surgery, only about 4 pounds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
Hello and welcome to Y.T.......I have three boys and had them all neutered around 6-8 months old......I was waiting because yorkies have a tendency to retain baby teeth so I wanted to have them extracted at the same time as when the neutering was done.....I didn't want them put under anesthesia twice...... As for a change in attitude I didn't notice any change what so ever. I even obtained a male at 18 months old....he wasn't neutered and he was a sweet heart. After his neutering he was still a sweet heart. ....The only thing I did notice was a lot less lifting, which was a definite benefit...... I'm sure everything will be ok to wait and do it when you feel he's ready......:) |
Canyon was neutered at 7 1/2 months. I also wanted to wait until he'd lost more of his baby teeth and would only have to be put under once for the neuter and remaining baby teeth. He had his neuter and two teeth pulled. He's still the sweetest boy now as he was prior to his neuter. |
Harley was about 6.5 months when he was neutered. I haven't seen any change in his personality since. When he went in he weighed 4.5 lbs and had no problems at all. My vet keeps both spay and neuter patients over night, and when we picked him up the next day it was as if nothing happened! My vet will not neuter before 6 months. Jeri and Harley |
Since most Yorkies need at least some of their milk teeth removed, many of us wait until 6 or 7 months so that the vet can pull remaining baby teeth. Like the others said, no one wants to put them under twice. Not all vets are familiar with this trait of the Yorkie, so you might want to inform your vet about the teeth and make a decision based on that. |
My vet also will not spay or neuter until 6 months of age on small breeds. Mainly because of the teeth and the fact that their immune systems are not fully developed at a younger age and anesthesia would be more of a risk. He is a good size but I would wait for a couple more months to get everything done at once. Make sure you do a preop blood panel to test for any infections or issues that would cause the anesthesia to be unsafe. Do it no more than 1 week before the neuter, and preferably the day before or the day of the surgery to get the best results. :) |
Thank you all for your input!! I did NOT know about the teeth! I will definitely wait until 7 or 8 months of age and have them taken care of at the same time. Im not crazy about him going under at all! He's my baby and im sure i'll be a nervous wreck. |
I think that Seymour was 8-9 months when he had surgery. |
They typically tell you to spay/neuter your puppies at 6 months old...however, with smaller breeds, they may prolong surgery so they can gain some weight! :D |
It's a fine line because you also want to do it before they start marking, and this can occur at 8 months or even sooner for some faster maturing dogs. While neutering cuts down on marking, it doesn't always eliminate it in those dogs that marked before surgery. |

I had my Bryan done at 7 months.....all but one of his teeth and fallen out to I had them pull it out while he was under.....At six months exactly he teeth just started falling out every day and he started grabbing my arm standing on his hind legs and humping the air.....It was kind of funny because you could tell he really didn't know what he was doing:rolleyes: Once I had him neutered he stopped humping the next week:thumbup: |
I think 6 months is a great age, especially with your guy being a good size at this time. We had Ranger neutered at 6 mos, and he's never lifted his leg. He also had 4 baby teeth pulled. He was 3.2lbs. I got Ryder at 14 months, and had him neutered at 15mos. He was 2.7lbs and did great! Despite being older, he DOES NOT mark (thank God), and is the sweetest thing ever. However, I think that's a crap shoot and better all around to do it as soon as its safe. Like Nicki sais- make SURE you do the complete blood work the day of the surgery. Good luck! |
1 Attachment(s) You have to wait until those baby teeth are there. Jax was close to 8 months and had to have 10 baby teeth taken out. The vet said when she opened his mouth she felt it was a little land shark on the table. He didn't change at all. I feel there was a small potty training delay but nothing major. |
