Anyone Feeding Their Yorkies RAW? Hello Everyone! Snickers has REALLY REALLY bad food allergies, I've tried about everything. Dry food with no wheat, corn etc. all that bad stuff that dogs are usually allergic to. I've also tried feeding him MISSING LINK.. (he doesnt eat it) I've also tried Fish Oil (he doesnt eat it, and if he does his breath smells horrible) So I've decided to switch over and feed him a RAW diet. :) I have a small little organic pet shop by my house that only sells healthy holistic foods to pets. I spoke to a lady about feeding raw, and she told me it is the most natural thing to feed a pet. and it is much much healthier..(NOT CHEAPER OF COURSE) but i don't care because I love my baby and i want him to be healthy!! so anyone have any thoughts? Or is feeding their babies raw diet right now? I'm trying to feed him raw but he doesnt seem to like it because there is no smell so i had to mix it with something else.. |
Hey there. My boys are on raw and have never looked better. I use the pre-made raw by Nature's Variety and Primal (my favorite) and dehydrated raw by The Honest Kitchen, which I am planning to use exclusively. Just a question, but how do you know it's food allergies? Many people think the allergies are related to food, when in fact it is most often environmental.. |
My babies are on raw.............Stella and Chewy. They are eat the duck formula and are doing great. Of course it is a lot more expensive, but hope it pays for itself, fewer trips to the vet as they age. Mine love raw, and don't drink as much when they eat raw. I do worry about that and hope their kidneys are ok. My oldest was about 2lbs overweight and has lost a pound on raw. I also put salmon oil on their food once a day. |
yeah i've heard pretty good things about feeding raw.. snickers is having a hard time eating it.. but i am sure that in the long run it will be a lot healthier for my fur baby!! thanks for your input! I also had another question..how do you guys thaw it? The lady in the store told me to run it under hot water.. (but it still doesnt stop it from being FROZEN) or do you guys store in the fridge?? I'm just new to this whole thing.. haha |
I feed raw and just love it. As far as him not liking it - you may want to try other flavors, what are you feeding right now? And yes, I totally thaw mine - it would have much less flavor if still partly frozen. I usually take out about 4 days worth of raw, set it out to thaw on the counter, then keep it in tupperware in the fridge over the next 4 days. I have never heard of running it under hot water; while that will de-thaw it, I wouldn't totally recommend that as you might kill some natural enzymes (which you want to keep). What symptoms are you seeing related to allergies? It may not be the food. But, if you are seeing allergies of any kind, you may want to add-in some other supplements to support optimal digestion and skin. |
I feed my three raw. I buy meat from the grocery or a buying group. Feeding that way is no more expensive than a "good" brand of kibble for little dogs. If you buy the pre made raw then yes, it would be quite a bit more expensive. Sometimes when just starting out you can sear the meat on each side. (just a couple of seconds on each side) That brings out the smell more. This works better with just raw meat as opposed to pre made raw. |
he's having such a hard time eating it!! its so frustrating.. snickers is A VERY VERY picky eater. i tried mixing it in with his canned food... but just now he threw up a little bit..i'm a little concerned.. snickers does sometimes burp and just throws up.. but i'm scared his stomach is having a hard time getting used to this raw diet? does anyone have this same problem?! |
We feed NV raw and Bravo raw to our pups. Our dogs made the transition without any stomach upset. I would suggest trying a different kind of raw than what you are doing right now. My dogs love lamb and chicken, but don't like duck as much. Also, different companies have different ingredients in their raw meat. Bravo has the ingredients listed on the front, for instance, the duck is only duck meat and bones, so it is pretty much just ground duck and no other things. NV adds more to their foods, too. What kind of raw food are you feeding? Mmm, every time you say your dog's name is snickers it makes me crave chocolate... |

If your baby is vomiting, that's really a concern. Transitioning to raw can cause some poo issues for a bit if the dog is detoxing, but vomiting should not be a part of that at all. It sounds like your baby has a bit of a history of vomiting? Could you explain that a bit more -- and maybe some of us would have some suggestions for you. |
I feed raw to several of my babies and MOST of the time they love it, but ONLY when it's completely thawed, as others have said. Otherwise they won't touch it. Some days they turn their nose up and I have to put a few bites of cheese or a spoonful of yogurt on the plate with the raw and then they eat it all. Mine don't care for the regular chicken flavor or the duck. Organic chicken is their favorite, followed by beef, and finally lamb. I cut it up into tiny pieces and it's much easier for them to eat. If you have to have something heated for him to be enticed I suggest cooking a little chicken or some hambuger meat and putting a few tiny pieces in between the raw. He'll go for the hamburger or chicken first because it's cooked and smells better, and then he'll realize he's hungry and keeping on eating the rest of what's on the plate, which includes the raw. After a few days he should eat just the raw by itself. Yorkies are so picky, aren't they?:D |
we feed pre-made RAW here too! ;) LOVE IT! :) |
